Snowflake Adoption Agency Honored
by Josh Montez, correspondent
Adopting out frozen embryos leads to prestigious award from congressmen.
Members of Congress who have banded together to support adoption are giving the
prestigious Angels in Adoption Award to Nightlight Christian Adoptions. The
award commends the group's efforts in finding homes for frozen embryos, known
as "snowflakes."
"The award was something that was given by the Congressional Coalition on
Adoption Institute, the CCAI," said Kathryn Deiters, a Nightlight spokeswoman.
"There is going to be a national ceremony held in Washington."
CCAI was created in 1985 as "a bicameral, bipartisan alliance of members of
Congress dedicated to improving adoption policy and practice, and to focusing
public attention on the advantages of adoption." More than 180 members of
Congress are members.
Deiters said helping children find the best possible families is always her
agency's desire, and receiving this award carries a special honor.
"The main reason that we received the award through our congressman here,
(Rep.) Ed Royce, (R-Calif.), was because of the work that we have done in our
snowflake frozen embryo adoptions program," Deiters said.
Part of that work is making frozen embryos or 'snowflakes' available to couples
wishing to give birth to these children. Kelly Keim and her husband adopted
snowflake twins. She's excited for the organization that helped them.
"I think it's wonderful that they are being recognized because I think it's
great for others to hear about adoption because not that many people know about
it," Keim said, "but through this award maybe others will hear about it."
The Keims and other snowflake families will travel to Washington next month for
the award ceremony. It is Kelly's desire to help educate members of Congress on
embryo adoption.

This is the same agency - Nightlight - that handled the woman who died in
Russia's adoption.
Here is an update on that particular case:

Somebody from the family's church has donated the money for travel expenses.
