Adoption group says new register is step in right direction
30/03/2005 - 12:11:24
The body representing adopted people in Ireland has welcomed the
official launch of a new register to help adopted people contact their
natural parents.
Adopted people and their birth parents can put their names on the
register and, if a match is made, both parties will be informed
individually and offered the opportunity to make contact with each
other.
Adoption Ireland spokesperson Susan Lohan said: "It's the first in many
steps which the Department of Health need to implement.
"It certainly will allow adopted people bypass the myriad of waiting
lists which are found in almost all of Ireland's adoption agencies,
many of whom don't event actually employ social workers any more."

I too was at the launch of the much-welcomed Adoption Preference
Register today. It is something that the Adoptive Parents Association
of Ireland has campaigned for, for over twenty years.
I am curious as to what agencies Susan Lohan has identified that
"don't even actually employ social workers any more". I would ask her
to name them, except that I can only think it was an off-the-cuff
remark that was taken out of context.
There is but a handful of registered agencies left. Yes, there are
waiting lists, but I know of no agency that doesn't have fully
qualified social workers, working solely in search and reunion.
There are virtually no children being placed for domestic adoption in
Ireland.
