New signs point out safe havens for newborns
May 19, 2006
City officials on Thursday unveiled signs placed throughout Chicago
marking save havens for infants whose parents can't care for them.
The signs, which read "Safe babies, safe place, safe haven" and feature
a toll-free information number, are posted at all 177 of the city's
police stations, staffed fire stations and hospitals. Parents in
Illinois are given immunity from criminal prosecution if they leave an
infant at a designated safe haven within 72 hours of birth.
Dawn Geras, president of Save Abandoned Babies Foundation, called the
postings a vital step.
"I think the confusion is people don't know that safe havens exist and
what they are," Geras said. "If people knew about it, we wouldn't
continue to find babies illegally abandoned."
The City Council passed an ordinance requiring the signs in June,
backed by Alds. Virginia Rugai, Daniel Solis and Walter Burnett, Geras
said. Geras and her non-profit organization hope the rest of the state
follows.

Baloney. There are safe haven signs all over the place around where I live
and there was a baby found in a garbage can not long ago - Thankfully it was
alive.
