Newborn Left At West Covina Fire Station Under Safe Surrender Law

April 24, 2007

LOS ANGELES -- A newborn girl left at a West Covina fire station is
the ninth infant to be turned over to Los Angeles County authorities
this year under the Safe Surrender program, it was announced Tuesday.

The baby -- the 56th infant to be surrendered since the program was
initiated six years ago -- was dropped off at West Covina's Fire
Station 1 on Saturday and transferred to Queen of the Valley Hospital.
She will be placed with a family for adoption by the Department of
Children and Family Services.

The Safe Surrender law allows a parent or someone designated by a
parent to surrender a healthy baby within 72 hours of birth to any
county hospital or fire station, with no questions asked and no
repercussions.
