Gerrold was the writer behind The Trouble With Tribbles, from the
original series.
One of the earliest earth/alien SF stories I recall with a foster/
adoption theme is Enemy Mine, by Barry Longyear, made into a pretty
bad flick in the '80's.

......enemy mine, with dennis quaid and louis gossett jr?
just proved how much aliens and americans really do get along....
male alien got pregnant from time itself and had a sad ending.
it was touching , the pit wit the man eating teeth was painful.
but i still like stuart little just as much.
..adoption stops a beating heart....
and no one cares.
