Trying to cut a long story short - just after Easter I interviewed for a
children's librarians position at a public library as arranged by a locum
placement service I am registered with. It was to be a short term contract
appointment. In the end I wasn't offered the job as I couldn't start when
they wanted me. I had still to finish up at my old job. The placement guy
says they loved my interview and as the jobs would be offered again as
permanent positions would I consider myself available to accept one of the
roles (offered PT as I wanted) when it became available in June? I of course
agreed.

Cut to the chase 2 months later - they advertise the positions (which they
must do by law). I contact the agency who say that as the organisation still
have all the notes from the original interview I don't need to reapply or
reinterview (!) according to the library people who interviewed. I would be
used as the benchmark for the other applicants and will be offered the job
if I'm still the best person (which I thought was an odd way of doing
things).

So today I get a call from the placement guy saying that the interviews had
been completed and they didn't find anyone they liked but *were going to
readvertise*!!!!! What the @#$%%$!!!

So now I don't know whether to ring them directly and ask them whether they
actually want to employ me or not. I'm wondering if it might have something
to do with the placement fees. I don't think that I can bypass the agency
for this position but I'm worried in case it's the agency who are either
misrepresenting things or somehow stonewalling the situation.

What do you all think? I'm confused. I just left a disfunctional job - I
certainly don't need to find myself in a similarly disfunctional situation.

If it were I, I'd re-apply ( send in the same application as previously --
obviously worked well enought he first time).

I have never given them an application. Because I was going through the
agency *they* had all my details (which would have been passed on).

(dysfunctional) you can always not accept or quit what ever the case

i would go down to the library and talk to them.  sounds like the agency
stuffed up, or they are lying to you and there is some dud reason you are
not getting the job.  maybe they are not taking you b/c they dont want to
pay the agency fee, that happens

good luck, you deserve this job

If they have advertised the job then I'd go in and remind them who you
are.  It can't be seen as going behind the agencies back if the job is
out there for public too.  Your still the public.  Good luck, sounds
like a great job!  Working with books all day....wonderful!
