hehehe

Not long to go now.... only a day.

I did read in the paper a few days ago,  that a few hosptials have cancelled
some operations due on the 1st and 2nd, to clear up bedspace, allowing for
women whom are close to due date or over due date as they suspect some wont
turn up for their appoitments today and tommorow and will wait until the
1st.

I dont know anyone whom is due now... I wish I was thou....not for the money
.... I just want another child....

*sighs... dreams of more children.....

They actually put out a health warning about this. Women have been asking to
postpone C-sections until after the 1st so that they can get the money.

Okay, someone clue me in.  Are they paying a chunk of money to moms or
something?

All woman in Australia after july 1 get a one off payment of $3000 (
children must be born after this date) it increases in a few years to $5000.
It is not means tested so everyone gets it.Previously it was $800 and was
means tested.

Yep thats  one part of it. Austrlia has an ageing population so to sustain
us we need to breed! lol. Now if only they would help with fertility
treatments!

Well, most of us think it's got something to do with the Federal election,
which must be held later this year.

It's the non-means-tested bit I really don't like.  Why should some rich
person, who doesn't really need the money, get it when it could go to support,
say, disabled children?

I have a friend whose 5 children all have a genetic disorder that can produce
hypotonia (low muscle tone).  With the eldest (now in Yr 7), she got many
discounted or free services and items to help with the disabilities.  The
fifth child (preschool age) has had to be paid for.  Sure there is an
allowance, and some discounts are left, but paying for splints and wheelchairs
isn't cheap.  Disgusting.

I believe it should be means tested.
They really should have drawn a line somewhere or reduced the sum somewhat.

I'm so with you on this Chookie.
I would love to see it being spent where its really needed, but alas,
because its not so obvious to voters where the money goes if its used for
say, oh more places for autistic kids (very topical here at the moment as
you would know), more therapy for kids who need it, more therapeutic
equipment for kids who's parents can't afford more than a basic wheelchair
...
...sigh...

she went into labour on her own( she must be very relieved), waters broke at

I think the whole paying people to have babies is rediculas, mind you if
anyone wants to give me 3 grand I'd take it!

Its bloody sickening actually.  Many major hospitals have put a ban on
elective C-sections in the first week of July so that  actual births and
real emergencies are better able to be dealt with.

We have a Federal election due later this year .... does this clue anyone in
to why the last budget has decided to fix our "declining fertility" with
money??
Its a one-off payment to new mothers for babies born after July 1 (why oh
why didn't they make the announcement retrospectively in order to avoid
people trying to "hold on" until tomorrow???)  There are concerns that many
people will not use the money wisely (well duh!).

As far as I'm concerned, a healthy baby should be the goal and the money
would have been better spent in *improving childhood healthcare
services*!!!!!!

It certainly looks like we will be getting it though and we have decided to
plough it in to an education fund for both kids. ... hey I might not agree
with how the situation is being handled, but I won't look a gift horse in
the mouth (especially since the money comes from our taxes anyway).

OK rant off.

We get a similar thing but at the moment it's only $1200 per baby but I
think it's being increased in the new budget along with all the other
child and family benefits and tax credits. I know the family support is
going up from April next year $25 for the first child on top of what
they already get and $15 for subsequent children on top of what they
already get. And you can earn up to $70k to qualify so we'll be
eligible. We 'should' get an extra $160 a week or is it fortnight I
can't recall now.

Tricky Dicky's buying votes alright -

Yes, there are people who will have the kid to get the money (!!) - the ones
that don't realise that it takes a lot more than $3k to raise a kid.

**Another rant

But a couple of days ago, someone reported on 2UE that Centrelink had
advised them family payments are reducing by $23 per week(?) from September,
so people relying on this $3K and the other $600 need to also keep the money
to make up the shortfall later in the year. And we all have heard stories
about how understanding they are is you don't estimate your income
correctly.

This government is truly rapacious - balancing the budget is a good thing
and has a lot going for it - it is just the way they do it that is so
bloodyminded. Reminds me of being in SAfrica in the old days where the
patrician leaders of the country decided what's good for everyone - the
sooner they go the better.

I've heard criticsism toward parents who have used their $600 per
child to buy X boxes, holidays etc. And I reckon, so bloody what.
These people scrimp and save and if they get a windfall and spend it
on something fun for their children, then good on them. Why shouldn't
children who go without and wear 2nd hand clothing and eat mince most
of the time get a toy or a treat???

If I lived there that is what I would do with it!  we rarely get to buy
anything nice for Bonnie or ourselves that it is nice to get a treat now and
then.  We where yelled at for using our income tax return to buy a new
computer.  The old one was 6 years old and we had tons of programs that we
could not use because the computer was not the right speed.

I was referring to the concerns that were voiced by one of the family groups
that the money might be used to buy drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

...and by the way.. I was raised eating mince, sausages,  porridge, (and
thankfully, home-grown vegies and fruit) and wearing 2nd (3rd, 4th) hand
clothing.

and what the OP is saying, is that you would have been entitled to a treat
here and there, not that mince and second hand clothing are bad!

:)

No they weren't bad which is my point - we weren't hungry and we had
clothes.
I had plenty of treats ... my bike might have been one my Dad found at the
dump and fixed up for me, but I was so proud to have a bike I didn't care
where it came from.  One of my best childhood friends grew up with much less
money than we had, and she never felt deprived of treats either ....
although she did often wish her parents had a phone.

Spending money on holidays and TVs and computers is not an unwise use of the
handout IMNSHO.  The stated worry for misuse by the concerned families
groups were for the money to be used on items which wouldn't benefit the
kids in anyway (which sadly already happens a lot in these parts).

I still reckon that I'd rather see the money being devoted to better
facilities for kids  - like early intervention for autistic children ... or
some desperately needed speech pathology for kids like my nephew with Down's
Syndrome (which he's never had as he is not a "priority" even though his own
family don't understand what he is saying most of the time).  Perhaps my
friend's 4 yo daughter with Cerebral Palsy could nearly have that $4000
walker which they'd love to be able to give her ... and probably will with
the $3000 hand-out for their new baby due later this year.
Its vote buying plain and simple.
