I believe it certainly does have its place for a lot of families.
It sure is a lot of money and Im glad they are giving it in installments
to teenagers. I know at 15 I would have thought getting 3k for having a
baby would be a fabby idea.

But what about those teenage mothers who could have used the lump sum to
buy a crib, a full baby kit and a safe new car seat for their babies?
Now they will get it dribbled out in such small amounts that it pretty
much will get lost in the noise of day to day living. Why is it better
to spend it on smokes and pizza in small installments rather than on a
couple of big ticket items right at the start? Just because a mother is
young doesn't mean that their babies don't deserve a chance to get some
nice new stuff too.
It wasn't so very long ago that women had to fight for the right to
manage their own money as they saw fit, because it was "obvious" that,
if given a chance, women would just fritter their money away on silly
nothings. Everyone *knew* that women needed men to tell them what they
could spend their money on - it was for their own good, after all.
Replace "women" with "teenage mothers" and "men" with "the government"
and you've reinvented the same social system. Now we just need to creep
the age cut-off for installments up every couple of years, extend the
now re-accepted principal to a few other areas and, ta da! Here we are -
back, almost, to the begining. Almost, except that now, instead of our
fathers or husbands deciding how often we can have some money to spend,
it's the government. Do you really want the government micromanaging
the lives of women to this extent?
I think they should either just hand it out to all mothers to spend how
they like, or pay it to everyone in installments. Do you not find it
ironic that Howard thinks these mothers are so ignorant that they cannot
be trusted with such a pittance as a one off, $3000 payment, but it is
perfectly a.o.k. to place the life of a child in their hands? What a
crazy world!

Hi,
I'm new to reading this newsgroup and being a teenager when I had my
first two children I just had to respond.
I agree with you. Being a teenager has nothing to do with being a
responsible mother. There are plenty of women who had/have children
at the 'normal' age and are completely irresponsible. What the
junkies, the alcholics and gamblers with kids. That money certaintly
won't be going on things for the baby.
Like you said, either give it the same to everyone or don't give it at
all.

Yeah.. I was a bit harsh when I generalised about 'teenage mothers'.
I meant what would have been relevant to me when I was a teenager.
I highly doubt I would have bought baby items.. I was way more concerned
with the latest fashions and undoubtably would have gone shopping.
That was me. Then.
I totally see your view and I realise that there are teenage mothers out
there that would spend the money wisely and for them receiving it in
installments sucks.
It is crazy.

Oh don't worry about it. :) I didn't see it as being harsh. Despite
me and I'm sure everyone who recieved the bonus and will recieve the
baby bonus it's a god send, I think it probably wasn't a very good
idea of the govt to do to begin with. There are too many people, from
all ages to all walks of life, who will misuse it unfortunately.
My oldest daughters friend's mother works the phone's for Centerlink
and she said to me that once all the people who desparately needed the
money stopped ringing they started getting calls from women who's
husband's are earning 100k a year, wondering why they don't get the
bonus. Incredible.

And unfortunately there are those younger mothers who do that and make
the rest of us look bad! lol

Ya know, considering that current fashion is low slung hipsters teamed
with teeny Titney tops, I don't think many girls today will be snapping
up fashion items in the immediate postpartum period - and if they do,
their just punishment will be waiting for them when they go to pick up
their first pack of Mother & Child snaps at the One Hour Photo.
I agree with Nic, that this whole Baby Bonus thing has been poorly
thought out and executed in a way that seems designed to encourage us to
think poorly of young mothers. I think I smell an election coming on

lol I know! I'm only 28 and there's no way in a million years I'd be
waearing those tiny tops. The jeans are super comfy but I make sure
all skin is covered!

Oh absolutely! It's must be getting bad if they are now trying to
bribe voters though. Still, I'm not going to say no if they want to
give it. Means we can get much more for the kids than we might be
able to otherwise and that's always a good thing. Might not be all
toy's like they want..lol
