Hi guys, I had #2 two weeks ago! I need some advice -- he had a tongue tie
which loosened enough for breastfeeding in the first 24 hours, but wasn't
great so I had a couple of notches cut in it three days ago which improved
his seal. But, he is still gulping air and needing to be burped, and he can
be an incredibly loud feeder, hee-haw hee-haw as he feeds. He also is much
more spit-upy than Meg. Meg burped about three times as a little baby and I
was able to just latch her on and go back to sleep at night. This guy, no
go.
Can anyone tell me why he gulps air or is so loud when nursing, or give
other advice?
Thanks
Dagny

Both mine gulped, guzzled, and smacked around quite a bit until they were
old enough to handle the flow. I think I had a bit of overactive letdown,
especially with #1 since I also had way more milk then any one baby could
drink. It ended quicker with #2.
I've heard that hand expressing through the initial let down helps with this
but to be honest, I never did it.

Tongue tie is when the bottom of the tongue is attached too tightly, or
to put it another way, more of the tongue is attached than in most
people. This can cause feeding problems, so some people get it
clipped.

I've no idea, but YoungBloke has gulped air and snorted, snuffled and
smacked his way through feeds for 15 months now and shows no sign of
stopping!

Could you have a very fast letdown?
Jessica would gulp like that quite a bit. You could actually hear her
swallow the air with the milk and it sounded painful. She let a few very
violent burps here and there. Now that she's older, latching better and my
milk production is more regulated she doesn't do it as often. HTH

I'm not sure.
I rarely feel let-down, but that's probably not relevant.
One difference with this second kid, I have not had very much leakage at all
this time around. Another difference, is I am nursing both kids. ??????????

That's about exactly the same with us, except Galen isn't a terribly noisy
nurser. Now that he's over 4 months old he hardly spits up at all (at the
worst it was once or twice a day on average, and quite a bit).
