DD4 has been a nursing champ, not including the weight gain issues.  We've
been through many a course of antibiotics without thrush, or with easily
treated thrush.  All of the sudden at 8 months, nursing hurts!  Like clench
your teeth, first week of nursing a newborn hurts.  I was on antibiotics
last week for an eye infection, so I started taking acidophilus and then
when I felt a twinge of thrush started treating with Nystatin.  That didn't
work, so it was on to Genetian violet.  Now it just plain hurts.  It hurts
most when she latches on, but continues to hurt while she's nursing.  What
do I do next?

Take a pregnancy test?

If it's thrush ... never had this so I don't know.  I do wonder why you have
had to take so many courses of antibiotics?  Once I stopped thinking that
was a good idea ... I've managed to stay away from antibiotics for me and my
kids and stay in good health for about three years so far.

My husband's out to sea.  It's definitly not that :)

The antibiotics were for DD, minus my one course for my eye infection.
She's been ill with pneumonia and recurring ear infections despite tubes.
She has immune system problems, so as anti-medication as I would like to be,
she needs them.

Did you give DD4 some acidophilus too? What works best for me is
treat baby with acidophilus and/or nystatin and then I use
miconizole on my nipples 4 times a day (you can buy it over
the counter as a vaginal yeast cream (monistat 7)).

If it is yeast you may need to do oral diflucan, you'll need
to see your doctor to get a perscription.

Kellymom has some links to Jack Newman's info on yeast treatments:

I hate thrush.

Maybe a silly question, but what's going on with her teeth? Harry is
teething big time right now, and is still not used to his new bottom front
teeth, so nursing him is very, very painful (he's not biting, his teeth are
getting in the way).

No teeth, no starts of teeth :)  None of the other girls got teeth til after
12 months, so I'm guessing she'll be somewhere in the same time frame.  Not
a silly question at all.

Denise,

Are things getting better for you yet?  Are you for sure it's thrush?
What have you tried so far?  I have tons of thrush advice but don't
want to post it if you have already tried it or have decided it is not
thrush.

If it's not thrush I don't know what else it could be, as my nipples are
white and itchy/burning/ick don't touch me feeling :)  So far I've tried the
monistat stuff from the drug store, I've eaten a butt ton of yogurt (which
is not something I enjoy), nystatin cream on me, and genetian violet, all
while treating DD with the nystatin orally.  The pain has lessened or a
little, but I still dread latching her onto the right side.  The left side
is fine.  I'm open to any advice that'll make it feel better.

I'll tell you everything I remember doing during my epic battle with
thrush a few years back.

I put vinegar on my nipples after every feeding.  I also used tea tree
oil on them and sprinkled them with acidophilus, along with the
ointments--I used lotrimin, micatin, and tinactin to get all strains of
yeast.

In addition to eating yogurt, I switched to all whole grains, quit
eating dairy except yogurt, and cut out sugar.

I went to the health food store and got a supplement called yeast-away;
I don't remember what all was in it.  I took extra vitamin c,
acidophilus capsules, and other supplements I can't recall--yu could
google it though.

Eventually I got oral Diflucan from my OB.

That's allI remember ATM.  Good luck, I know it's miserable.
