Hi,
My name is Chrissy I`ve just resubbed to MKB after a 2 1/2 year absence
during which I`m happy to say I breastfed DD for 2 + years until she self
weaned.

We have just had a little boy who is 9 days old and I am having a few health
problems. I have a thrombosis in my thigh which is being treated with
fraxodi injections every day. My Gp assured me the injections are compatable
with bfeeding. I`m getting conflicting info on line however. If someone has
access to Hales PLEASE could you look this up for me.

Thanks
Chrissy <panicking...>

Congratulations on your new baby :-).

Fradoxi isn't listed under that name - is there another name it's known by?

The nearest anti-coagulant I can find in the 2004 ed is Fragmin (aka low
dose heparin), listed as an L2 with Paediatric Concerns "Transfer to milk is
low. Oral bioavailability is minimal. Side effects remote.  No adverse
effects were reported".

I don't think Fraxodi is available in the U.S.  I googled it, but
unfortunately most of the information I could find is in languages I don't
speak (French, Dutch, German).  It does look like it is the same class of
drug as Fragmin.  I didn't see any mention of breastfeeding on this site
http://www.doctissimo.fr/medicament-FRAXODI.htm, but again, I don't speak
French.

Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) translates this page as saying
that Fradoxi is low molecular weight heparin which is the same thing as
Fragmin, afaics.  It does say to consult a doctor before taking it while
breastfeeding but most drugs say that anyway.

Thanks, I didnt even think about US availability, sorry.

The composition is nadroparine calcium at 19 000 UI AXa . I`ve also checked
the forums at Tom Hales site, all he says are the older typer heperin drugs
are OK. I`ve been told the pill form is not compatable but the injections
are.
The leaflet says breastfeeding is fine but other online sites say it is not
recommended due to lack of info... this is why I`m concerned.

The problem with figuring out the safety of a lot of these drugs during
nursing is that there really isn't much information for a lot of them,
especially newer ones which it sounds like this one is.  I don't know what
to say, except that if you do have a deep venous thrombosis in your leg,
that is a serious condition itself which should be treated.  I do know that
the U.S. forms of the injectable heparins are often used during pregnancy,
but I haven't had any experience with them in nursing patients.  Have you
tried calling your pharmacy to see what information they have?  I have found
that pharmacists tend to be very conservative in saying what is okay and
what's not - maybe sometimes too conservative, but it is their job to warn
you about everything.

Thanks Sarah,
I see hwat you mean. The pharmacist just looked at the leaflet and said
'Yes no problem'. I guess I`m going to have to have some faith and trust the
pros. easier said than done for a natrual skeptic :0)
