Liam is now 22 days old and lately he has been inhaling a lot of air during
feeds. I am not sure what is wrong with his latch since I have pulled his
lips and relatched when it's really bad but nothing solves the air
issue..it's like he is losing suction (you can hear the clicks) and
swallowing a lot of air with each gulp...the result is that he starts
getting fussy at the breast after a few minutes..I burp him and then he
wants back...nurses a few more minutes and that repeats itself several times
which means that he is at the breast for most of the day...
It would be fine if I didn't have a toddler and a house to care for but as
it stands if feels like I can't do anything else but nurse him all day...he
sleeps some 4-5 hour stretches through the night.
When I burp him his burps are huge and you can feel that he relaxes after
them...so I know he was in pain and that is what is causing him to get fussy
and let go of the breast...
Any ideas for the latch issue and the air inhaling?

Is he breathing through his nose ok? Might be having problems breathing and
sucking???? DD does this when she has the sniffles.

You have my sympathies. My second dd was at the breast constantly
because I had low supply, and I had a 3.5 year old too, so it was hard
with the baby wanting to nurse constantly.
I'd suggest to go to an LLL meeting and see if they can help you figure
out the latch issue. I hope you get it solved soon.

Could it have anything to do with letdown? My DD2 had troubles latching,
and she tended to have real trouble when I got a letdown, as the breast
would go too hard for her to hold on to (and when she came off, she wouldn't
go back on, so I had the opposite problem to you). Time cured our problem
(and the toddler turned in to a video addict, as I had to spend so long with
the baby).

I'm trying to remember what I did for that clicking noise - I remember
that sound well! Unfortunately, the solution is foggy at the moment...
Have you tried breast compression to help the flow?

Oh, I just remembered. I think the solution to the clicking sound is
to push the baby in closer to the breast.
Good luck,
