Well, I took the plunge and let Shiny have some banana... although she
doesn't sit well, she did *great*. I am skipping babyfood and just using a
bit of real banana mooshed a bit and given on the tip of a finger. She loves
it, acts like I've been holding out on her. Bird beaks for more, and gags
less than her sister did at the same age. Did well with a bit of chopped
cooked carrot, too.

In fact, the more texture, the easier it seems for her to handle/coordinate.
She really enjoys rolling stuff around on her tongue and "feeling" it in her
mouth. The finger-feeding method is very suprisingly low mess--we have none
of the puree in hair thing going on. She's had more tummy trouble than in
the past, though, but I'm not sure it's connected.

I realized that babyfood fruits were *out* as most contain citric acid,
which she hasn't tolerated in my diet (although I can have some citrus now
without a horrific rash. Yay!) But real banana, she likes.  Real carrots.
She ate most of a baby carrot, steamed, chopped fine and mooshed a bit, but
still with texture. I have friends who just started with jars of babyfood
and I can't tell you how glad i am to not deal with the
orange-and-green-moosh. She's been a very clean eater so far.

And she did sit, today, for 45 seconds before she tipped over. Looked smug
about it, too.

Is Shiny six months old already? Wow that went fast. And just to nitpick a
little, I am surprised that you gave her two foods and didn't just give her
one because of the allergy thing.

Playing it by instinct. She handled the bananas *super* well and we
waited a few days. Mostly I'm going with what we're eating for dinner
anyway, holding a bit out of whatever seems appropriate for her. So far
she's had no reaction whatsoever and LOVES eating. Tonight she only had
banana, but ate nearly a quarter of one, mostly chewing it out of my
fingers--I had to clear her a couple times when she got a little too
much, but nothing scary, just a slight "ack" on her part and I'd sweep
the excess out. Messy, but effective and she was very annoyed when I
finished the rest of the banana for her.

DD was like that too--never cared for the pureed stuff, and I was as happy
about it as you are. I never bought baby food for DS, but I did make it, and
it took time and freezer space. With DD, I just cooked her food a little
extra-long to make it good an mushy, and then let her have at it.  She
learned to use a spoon much younger than DS, too, because she so enjoyed
feeding herself, and did surprisingly well. She loved yogurt and
applesauce--still made messes, but we just gave them to her on evenings when
she was to have a bath anyway.

Glad it's going so well.
