On new news server.

Seems to be working Bob.

What boggles my mind is how -I- can make a post, never see it arrive on my
server (nor any reply to it), yet on an entirely different server, and
different software it miraculously shows up...  astounding.

I know there is a setting at the server level which can prevent users from
seeing their own posts, but I have never heard of the whole thread.  I
suggest doing the following...

1. ask for assistance from someone else in the group
2. create a new post using the problem server
3. the person frrom #1 sends you the headers

the headers will provide you with the document number from the problem
server.  You can then use your software to determine if you need to refresh
the whole group to clear out problems.  This could be as simple as the
document numbers are in conflict with you software... if you can't resolve
the issue, then escalate it to your provider.

When I used Pine I could easily edit the flat file containing the read
document numbers.  Clearing out that information resolved 90% of the
problems I've had.

Good luck,
Tracy

Tracy is better at this technical stuff than me, but when I started
researching the news server issues I found many ISP's are not investing in
sufficient servers to handle the traffic and allow access to all the
worldwide servers with newsgroup postings.  Usenet is a whole different set
of technology than an ISP or email require.  The ISP's trottle back usage,
slow it down, and just don't have the capacity to handle the growing volume
of newsgroup volume.  Part of the problem is related to bandwidth being
taken by growth in binaries and music files.  News groups that are text
oriented, like this one, get caught in the bandwidth crunch.

The result is slow response times, dropped messages particularly in
multi-part postings, and just plain crappy service.  That's why I switched.
My ISP, Earthlink, has had horrible news group service for a month.  There
are several options available like an ISP partnering with a news group
specialist company, and some ISP's are starting to outsource their news
group management to these companies.  The other option is to just add your
own news group provider.

I decided not to wait, and signed up for Giganews.  For $7.99 I get 2GB of
downloads per month.  If you do a lot of binaries and music downloads there
are higher GB levels of service, but they cost more.  Since adding Giganews
I have experienced 100% reliability and an increase in news group
availability.
