DaKitty - 24 Feb 2005 07:12 GMT Every other post here has my name in it. I get to live with myself all day long... It's repetitive.
Can we do something else? Let's exchange pet pictures!

I have a beagle with separation anxiety and an eating disorder, and a cat with oppositional defiant disorder (possibly also a sociopath). DD has a gerbil and a goldfish, both "handmedowns" from DS. The gerbil has a chewing compulsion.
She has made great strides in compasionate pet ownership, although she is still a little too huggy with psychokitty. She had a hamster once. It crawled up her sleeve. She tried to shake it out. Hamsters occasionally recover from comas, but this one was not among the lucky.
DS retains only the last in a series of pet rats, a box turtle that appears to be hibernating at the moment, an assortment of goldfish, and a beautiful but lethargic beta.
Let's see...DF had a cat, with a vulgar name that rhymes with "Kitty." No, not "Pussy." That does not rhyme. It died while we were on vacation last summer, which is probably for the best, as he is now free to acquire a new one with a more family-friendly moniker. DF also wants his own dog, "one that will play fetch." He has a pond full of goldfish that pretty much do their own thing. We've been looking into getting some ducks to keep the fish company, to satiate DS's desire to have "a zillion pets," and to provide a tasty alternative to Thanksgiving turkey. We have a copy of "Enslaved by Ducks" on order from amazon.com to make sure we are not making a mistake.

So the fish is not emotionally disturbed, i take it. :-) Our dog seems to have abandonment issues, as she needs to be against or ON you all the time, and she's not a small dog. We got her from a shelter and it appears she was abused and abandoned. She's the sweetest dog, but she still sometimes cowers when you reach up for something, although we've NEVER struck her.

Glibness/superficial charm. Grandiose sense of self-worth. Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom Pathological lying Conning/manipulative Lack of remorse or guilt Shallow affect Callous/lack of empathy Parasitic lifestyle Poor behavioral controls Promiscuous sexual behavior Early behavior problems Lack of realistic, long-term plans Impulsivity Irresponsibility Failure to accept responsibility for own actions

She's trying to get the cat to quit biting so much, I don't see what the problem is. It is a cat. She found hers as a wild kitten. I imagine the aggresivenss comes from it not being very tame.
I ran across a cat a few weeks ago that is just getting into the full grown stage. There was no taming this one, it was wild. If I caught her, I could hold her and pet her. As soon as I let go I'd get hissed at and she'd run. She was a real nice black cat, I wish I had found her earlier.
At first I thought it was one my son caught. There are some young black cats running wild where his mother lives. He told me one time that he wanted to try and catch one.

The problem is, that even if a biting cat is not a threat to one's safety in the way an aggressive dog is, it's still pretty unpleasant for children and guests to have to deal with the onslaught of minor flesh wounds all the time.

My aunt had a psychotic cat who would randomly leap on people's ankles and bite and scratch the hell out of them. Yes, it's just a cat, but it's still really painful, and cat scratches often get infected.
But I think it's a lot harder to figure out how to deal with behavioral problems in cats than in dogs. My favorite cat has decided that he's a magpie and is stealing my jewelry and hiding it. I have NO clue how to discourage this other than making it harder for him to grab things.

Yes, it's just a cat, but >it's still really painful, and cat scratches often get infected. What age is the cat? I've always liked to rough house with cats when I was younger. (you'd think after a while that I would admit that cats are a lot faster than I am). They tend to grow up a little more aggresive.
My son called the black stray we had "psycho." He said he got it tamed a little bit when it wandered off to where ever it is now.
>But I think it's a lot harder to figure out how to deal with >behavioral problems in cats than in dogs. My favorite cat has decided >that he's a magpie and is stealing my jewelry and hiding it. It used to get up on the frig, pull a tile off the ceiling, and climb up into the ceiling.
When I was a kid, we had this one cat that in the middle of the night would run full speed from one end of the house to the other. I came down stairs one time to see what was going on. It came through the kitchen as fast as she could, ran into my legs, got up and took off.
Cats don't surprise me anymore in what they do. When Linda tells me about her cat, I just say, "well, it is a cat." When mine disbehave, I tap them on the nose and tell them to quit. After a while they get a hint.

This kind of junk is just a by product of my moodiness and unrefined people skills.
Then again, something tells me you're not looking for an honest answer from me, but rather that yours was a rhetorical question with a built-in little put-down. If you intended to hurt my feelings, it worked. Is it my turn to hurt yours now? Oh, I know, you can do it to me, but if I do it to you, then it's a bad thing.
Also, I'm wondering, you could have started talking about pets, or anything else besides me, but you decided to turn the focus back on me, and put me on the spot to talk about me again. Then you're going to accuse me of me liking to be the center of attention. You know, that's very contradictory, on your part. See, when I don't answer, people make a big deal of it, and insist on an answer, and try to challenge me into answering, and complain and dish out putdowns if I do, and when I do, then many people complain I'm liking to be the center of attention and insinuating that's a bad thing, and dish out another set of putdowns.
So, I end up feeling like no matter what I do, it's going to be wrong, and people are going to be unhappy about it, and it will always be my fault.
Tell you what, my people skills aren't that great, and I really don't know what to do to make you all happy. Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but I'm seeing so much conflicting information, I don't know how to make sense of it all, and yeah, then I get frustrated and stop caring, and snip back at people. Contrary to what most people here have convinced themselves of, I too have feelings, and they do count. (I know, what a surprise, Kitty has feelings too. How could that possibly be!)
So, why doesn't this group put their heads together, come up with a set of instructions on how you'd like me to behave, that will make everyone happy, and I'll be happy to follow it, and please you all.

Go to your garage/where you store your tools.
Get a pair of pliers & wire cutters. Put next to your computer.

My SO and i have been told to f*ck off, go to h*ll, etc. in here over the years. It does hurt, especially when offering help that gets misunderstood; But when you learn to consider the source of the words instead of the words themselves, it's easier to let it roll off your back.
There's a lot more inner-peace in rising above the BS than there is in wrestling in it.
Try, when you feel yourself being provoked or dragged into something, to just drop it. Keep one of those squishy squeezie things next to your keyboard and when you feel the urge to strike out, pick that up instead. Or whatever other method of self-restraint works for you. :-)

I'm too sensitive for it. Nah, I don't think so. Somebody's gotta stick around here to keep these people in line. Despite their *pathetic* protestations.

Next time someone crosses the line and makes an uninvited intrusion IRL, I shoot first, ask questions later.

Nearl J Icarus - 26 Feb 2005 07:01 GMT >I *am* being myself, that's what gets me in hot water all the time. There's an awful lot going on in between you being yourself and the trouble you get into. A lot of people around here don't see the issues you're dealing with. Lashing out at faceless people is pretty easy. If we were all sitting at a big table drinking coffee, the conversations would not nearly be as extreme. The only reason I can see for you getting into so much hot water is because you're an outsider. Look at some of the stuff I get into. 8-) I'll always be a clique of one, so it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
