Even though Hurricane Katrina is about 200 miles away, she is already
having a major impact on our beaches here (about 45 miles east of
Pensacola Beach). Most of our protective sand dunes were leveled by
the combination of Hurricane Ivan last September and Hurricane Dennis
back in July.
I took these a couple of hours ago:

Thanks for the photos. Will that bar will last thru the next one?
And where are the young ladies wearing butt-floss? :-)

I'm not sure this bar will make it through this one. The surf levels
are already really high and we'll probably lose part of US Hwy 98 yet
again - 3rd time in 12 months. We have some mandatory evacuations
going on just because of the expected storm surge and waves.

Well, I saw one who was wearing a coverup - didn't cover it up much
though. ;-)

No offence, but that imagery is slightly upsetting.

Thanks dude. I'll be okay - even though this hurricane is extremely
strong and much larger in area than most, we're far enough away that
we'll top out around 70 mph or so. It's the places right along the
beach that will get clobbered by the waves and may collapse.

Damn, was that his sister??
Wait a minute ... was that the beautiful, sweet, unmarried 40 year-old?

How'd your beach bar fare? Is there any beach left?

Since I'm not sure if we have and La., Miss., or Ala. posters,
I'm certain Casey and his neighbors will show their typical
hospitality and grace toward those who are now stuck in
his neck of the woods unable to go home.
Things don't look real good for some folks.

No, they look dismal indeed. We have a large percentage of people here
with close ties to New Orleans and a lot of people from there who visit
here. Right now we have tons of Mississippi and Louisiana folks who
evacuated to this area.
The stories so far are grim - I was out with some friends this evening
and one of them ran into a couple he knew from New Orleans. They said
their home and entire neighborhood are flooded. To make it even worse,
they're staying at a condo here that has no power - thanks to Katrina.
I think we'll start seeing more and more horror stories from the
Biloxi/Gulfport area because of the massive storm surge. So far the
reporting from there has been spotty at best just of the damage and
lack of access.

Actually the bar is still there and the beaches didn't get hit as hard
as we were afraid they would. We've had a couple of days of pounding
waves that eroded everything even more, but the surge level wasn't as
high as was feared.
> more importantly, is there any BAR left??
It held up amazingly well as far as I could tell from the street.
I'll have to go check it out tomorrow if it's open. ;-)

Not that I am aware of, although it's possible that I might recognize
her - it is a very small town.
I wish I had managed to meet her though.

Ya know, after seeing all the photos of the nightmare in New Orleans,
my heart aches for its population. When I was down there a couple of
years ago, I'd wondered what the heck was keeping the gulf at bay.
Now I know. Not a lot... :-(
It was a beautiful and historic city - I hope they can rebuild.

One word:
Beach front property.
One other word:
Buy low (i.e. not Air pressure) and sell hi (not your state of mind
after a couple of kilkohkalkennies (or whatever them beers is called)).

An alternative - buy adjacent property that will be beachfront after
the current beachfront construction falls into the ocean.

Or buy low even while hi from the "them whatevers".
