Songs and smells

I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but songs and smells can
really take me back, more than photographs, etc.

I just heard a David Gray song and now I am full of emotions about a
boyfriend from 3 years ago, and I can't get him out of my head.  Stairway to
Heaven still takes me back to the dances in junior high school...

The smell of Coppertone takes me right back to family vacations in Myrtle
Beach and I feel that excitement of seeing the ocean when I smell it.  The
smell of Brut cologne still reminds me of my first boyfriend and I feel
sentimental when I smell it.

Do songs and smells bring you back?

Yes.  Totally.  I think this is primeval.

Its clear that hearing is more closely connected with mind,
brain, autowotsit nervous thingy and emotions than sight.
For example consider that at night you close your eyes but
your ears continue to work and you use an audible alarm to wake up
not someone waving a flag.

I reckon smells are similar.  Betcha a smell can wake a dog up.

I've read that smell elicits memory better than any other sense.

REPLY:  Yes, quite so.  Whenever i hear the song : 'Hey Baby Theyre
Playin' Our Song' by The Buckinghams...i immediately look for something
to grab and start singing into it .  When i hear 'Smoke on The Water' by
Deep Purple,  i usually buy a 6 pack of Sharps Beer at once. And,  if i
hear "Hit Me With Your Best Shot' by  whats-her-name ,  i start playing
Air Guitar regardless of where im at.  If i smell a certain perfume on a
woman (sorry, cant recall the name of it right now)...then ill take my
jacket off and let her walk on it.

This song by the Smothers Brothers reminds me of my favorite odor --
Tom: I fell into a vat of chocolate.  I fell into a vat of chocolate...
Dick: What'd you do when you fell in the chocolate?
Both: La dee doo dum la dee doo dum day...

Tom: I yelled 'fire' when I fell into the chocolate...
Dick: Why'd you yell 'fire' when you fell into the chocolate?
Tom: I yelled 'fire' cause no one would help me if I yelled 'Chocolate!'

Hell yes.
I'm not going to elaborate though 'cause I just don't want to go there.

Oh, yeah. "Cat's in the Cradle" reminds me quite a bit of my Dad. There's "Wild
Child" that was the favorite of an old girlfriend and "Radar Love" that was my
X's. In my collection of songs, there is a "mysongs" and a "hersongs" folders.

Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) reminds me of when i met my ex.  I was 21, and
when that song came on we danced on barstools.

Wild World (Cat Stevens) makes me think of when we split up becuz he said
that was how he felt about it, even tho it was an old song at the time..  Kind
of sad.

"Now that I've lost everything to you
You say that you want to start something new
And it's breaking my heart, you're leaving
Baby, I'm grieving
If you want to leave, take good care
Hope you find a lot of nice things to wear
Then a lot of nice things turn bad out there

You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breaking my heart in two
Cause I never wanna see you sad, girl
Don't be a bad girl
Now if you wanna leave, take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
Just remember there's a lot, I'd beware

Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by, just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you
Like a child, girl.."

There's a gauntlet of songs that remind me of my X. They start out with "Magnet
and Steel" and slide into "S.O.S.," "Angie," and finally ends with "What Do I
Have To Do."

When I started dating Linda, I gave her two albums. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and
"Songs of Faith and Devotion." (she has gotten a few more than that since, but
they've been my little compilations).

Yessss...every time I hear the Rolling Stones..

I remember when we'd be travelling with our children in the back and Bo
Diddley's song, "Who Do You Love" would be blaring out from the car
cassette..........

And the chorus (below) would repeat, over and over...."Who do you
love?"

And our son, 4,  would be yelling out, every time it was asked,
"LISA"!!! (his little neighbour!)

We always thought they'd end up married or something - he was smitten!

Who Do You Love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I walked 47 miles on barb wire,
Use a cobra-snake for a necktie.
Got a brand new house on the roadside,
Made from rattlesnake hide.
I got a brand new chimney on top,
Made from a human skulls.
Now come on baby, let's take a little walk
And tell me, who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I got a Tombstone head and a graveyard mind,
I lived long enough, and I ain't scared of dying

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

The sky was black and the sky was blue,
Down the alley an ice wagon flew.
Somebody bumped and somebody screamed,
You should've heard just what I seen.

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Arlene took me by the hand
She said: "Oo - ee, Daddy, I understand"

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I think we all have songs and smells that take us back in time .
The songs "Let's stay togeather" (Al Green )
and "Could this be the magic"(Barry Manilow) still reminds me of
my ex . The same goes with the song "Lets get drunk and screw" ( Jimmy
Buffet) .
Now that one is a real tear jerker for me   LOL : )
