I took my son to have his eye examed becuse he is near sighted. After
doing the regular exam, the doctor said everything appears to be fine
but then he instisted to have my son's eye dilated with eye drop. He
said this test will tell if there are any problems behind the eye
balls.
Is the dilation eye drop safe for kids and how often has this test been
used for kids ? What are the real purposes for the eye dilation?
if everything appears OK, should we skip this test?
Thank you for your help!

When the pupil is dilated the doctor can more readily visualize the
retina to examine blood vessels. This is the only place in the human
body where that can be done. My son has had it done at every pediatric
ophthalmologist examination and has never had an ill effect.
