Charlie Brown and dunking for apples

Was just watching Charlie Brown Halloween.   The kids were
dunking for apples at the party.  I remember doing this when I was
a kid in the 1960s.   Of course then, it was a very homogeneous
group, with clean heads.

Do they do this anymore--with all the multiculturalism and
head lice that seems to be such a problem now?  I
couldn't believe it a few years ago when I found out
about head lice becoming such a problem for kids
in this day in age.   I had thought this died out
in the 1930s.  NO kid I knew in grade school had
head lice.

Head lice are pretty common. They are not a condition of poverty or poor
parenting. It is a simple infection that travels easily.

And they've always been common.  People were just
too embarrassed to admit to them, so they made up other
excuses for missing school or whatever else needed explaining
away.  What is more likely to have changed is school policies
requiring notification to parents when there are cases of
head lice in the school or classroom.

Best wishes,

Head lice aren't a matter of cleanliness, like colds and flu they are a
matter of exposure.

So it must be the company one keeps.  My old pop used to say,
"laying with the dogs is a good way to get fleas."

I had head lice once when I was attending a Catholic girls boarding school.
Figure I got them riding the bus back to school from vacation one time.  No
company at all.  There's been a resurgence of bedbugs in hotels lately, I
have read.  Some very nice hotels.  Again, it's a matter of exposure.  Like
colds.  Do you think only sleazy people get colds?

I'm not sure what 'very nice' means to you, but I've stayed in many
hotels and motels and b&b's and I've never seen any evidence of
critters like this on my bed.  If I did I would't be there long.

I hope not.  My wife and I are just getting over bad colds.
I had it first and gave it to her.  Sometimes we go literally
years without a cold.

Oh I forgot Joan,  can head lice fly through the air like the cold
virus
on droplets of saliva after a sneeze.

No!
If they did, everyone would have them.

Strangely, clean hair attracts, rather than unwashed.
Work it out!!

No, but they are very easily spread, like when kids put on someone's hat.

Just because the transmission path is different doesn't defeat the analogy.

The key word here is "KNEW". You knew kids that had head lice, you just
didn't KNOW they had it.

And I assure you, it has nothing to do with clean heads or homogenization...

LES!

I agree with Joan we get lice due to exposure. I got mine a few years
ago from my sister who got it from her friends. Up until today I have
yet to know from who it originated from. There is just no way to
determine where the lice comes from.

I always knew when a kid had headlice. His Head was shaved, A girl always
wore a head cover.
It's still around but they now use a lice rinse to killm them.
