Would you take a 9.9 year old kid to see Spiderman 2? My mentee has been
asking for weeks. He saw the first one without problems.

A reviewer said he took his 8-year old kid. Said the kid was scared in one
or two places, but no big deal.

I think 9 years old is old enough.

I saw it this weekend and it is appropriate for a 9 year old IMHO -- low
on gore, high on soap opera adolescent self absorbtion and an actually
rather affecting villain

My 17 year old son described the movie as "dripping angst".
He's not happy because I'm making him go see it again.
This time he has to take his 13 year old sister and her friend.

I haven't seen the second one, but your soap opera comment reminds me
of a funny conversation I overheard between Ethan and one of his
friends.  They were almost 5 at the time.  The friend had just seen
the first movie and was telling Ethan about it.  He said, "There's a
really gross part in the Spiderman movie.  Want to hear about it?"
Ethan, of course, was all ears because we hadn't let him see it.
Friend said, "There's one part where they are kissing and putting
their mouths all over each other.  Eewwww!"  Ethan responded back
softly, "I think kissing is beautiful."

You can get specific info about the suitability of movies for children from

We went on Saturday with our three kids, boys 14.75, 11, and 6.5 .  We had
seenSpiderman (the first one) in the theater also. I couldn't see anything
overly scary, but then again, my kids are not easily scared. They are also
huge Spiderman fans.

There were a few slow spots (character development), but overall I would
recommend Spiderman 2 for anyone over the age of eight, or younger for those
who like this kind of movie. There were several children younger than mine
at the theater who sat through it without a peep.

Steve Rhodes online reviews are usually spot-on - I think he posts here.

Our boys 8 and 12--saw it over the weekend and loved it.  It was not
too intense for the younger one, but there were parts that I'm sure
were over his head in terms of story/character.  They really, really
liked it.
