Was this discussed before? I had to ask. What do you all think about
the US sitcom Everybody loves Raymond? Frankly, I get all agitated and
my bp goes up whenever that MIL walks into the door. DH cracks up over
each joke but I get all worked up. I can't believe anyone can live in
Debra's situation. That Raymond is a spine-less, lazy guy and if not
for the money he brings into the family, he's totally worthless. I
can't decide whether I hate Raymond more or his mom.
Anyways, as I said, I had to ask! What do you think?

My husband H.A.T.E.S Ray Ramono. We can not watch ANYTHING he is in.. I
wanted to see Welcome to Mooseport and nope cant. I dont even bother trying
to watch E,L,R at home because if it is on DH seems to come out of the room
to go potty (3rd shifter) and groans about it. The few episodes i have seen
I agree his The mom is a BIG pain in the rear..
I did see a funny one the other day where Debra was cleaning the stove and
her MIL said she was doing it wrong.. after about 3 or 4 tries Debra had
tricked her into washing the stove for her.. lol..
I happen to LOVE my MIL, well now that i dont live with her.. she is the
reason my daughter lived on Cookies and animal crackers for a year and would
not eat any real food.. I would not eat any real food if I knew I would get
a chocolate chip cookie anyway;)

Love it. Marie is my husband's grandmother (but Jewish). Cracks us up.

I like the show personally. I think it's funny and yes Marie is nosy and
bossy, but it is a TV show after all. You can't feel sorry for Debra because
it isn't a real life that we are talking about. Yes, relationships like
Marie and Debra do exist in real life that's why some people can relate to
it better, but I can't say that I show any kind of emotion to the show other
than it's a TV show and a funny one at that.

I think in real life, most MIL-DIL relationships are like that to a small
extent. The exageration of this is what makes it funny.
Besides, in real life, no one can take advantage of you without your
permission. In real life, you don't have to move in accross from your
in-laws. And if you don't want your in-laws help, you can say no thanks. And
if you don't like your in-laws advice, you can say, thanks, I will think
about that, just before you do it the way you want to.

I think it is a sitcom that has a situation in it that is built for laughs.
It pokes fun at in-law relationships, sibling rivarly (like when MIL makes
food for Ray, but not his brother), and marriage (with all the jokes that
Ray's dad makes about his mom).
I don't take it seriously or a model family.
Because most families have these sorts of tensions, and they are exagerated,
I think the show is really funny.
I like the Simpson's too, but I don't think it is a realistic look at family
life, even though it highlights some of the tensions in real families.

I think it's realy funny, actually. My kids tell me that I shouldn't
watch it because Frank (the FIL) says 'crap', and that's bad language
; ), but I watch it sometimes when they're asleep.
After I told a story about my MIL once, someone in our group laughed
and said "I can't believe you have the MIL form Everybody Loves
Raymond!" and that's when I knew I'd been putting up with a lot, and
had been pretty good humored about it (My MIL had come over and said
'It's so nice that you're not concerned about cleaning...etc....).
That may be why I like it. My DH is not all that different from Ray,
either. <Shrug./>

the house is dirty.. I wondered for a while if I should have said thanks to
that one;)

Said sweetly enough, you might have gotten away with, "How kind of you
to notice!"

Oh we think it is really funny :-) It is just like our own life only
massively exaggerated. That is what sitcoms do. They take a kernel of
something realistic and exaggerate it until you have to laugh.
