I was wondering if anyone could answer my question....
My son is 4 months hold, i breast fed him until he was 3 months and
supplemented him with formula so that his body would get use to it, as
i could not keep up my supply becasue he ate so much. When taken off
of the breast milk completely i was giving him Enfamil Lipil with
Iron. He stopped having BM like he was before. I understand that
breast milk has a natural laxative it in it and that is why i was not
concerned. I figured that his body needed to get use to the change.
WHen he went 2-3 days without going i became concerned. He also
started to have painful gas, and noticed that when he did have a Bowel
Movement it was painful as well. He seems uncomfortable most of the
time. I called my doctor to ask if i could switch his formula and he
insisted that he stay on it for the Iron. SInce then its seems to have
gotten worse, His BM's are pasty and dark, and he crys often because
of the gas pains. I called the doctors office today and spoke to one
of the nurses and told her and she recommended switching formulas, so
i am going to try him on The Enfamil Prosobee with fortified iron, soy
based. Just don't know if its the iron or the dairy causing
this...does anyone have any recommendations or information on this???

thank you,
Nikki :)

Probably the iron in the formula is the culprit.  Perhaps you could
alternate the iron formula with regular formula.  Say, perhaps every 4th
bottle or so.

Another option....use regular formula and give him baby vitamins.  They come
in a liquid formula with a dropper.

I wouldn't bother with Prosobee.  My first was on it and it really didn't do
anything good (we listened to the ped and gave it to her though).  Just try
a regular formula that's not "with iron".

Hi -

Your baby's problems could certainly be caused by the iron in the
formula.  But they could also be caused by the increased amount of cow's
milk protein he's taking in now that you've stopped nursing.

My first suggestion, if you are able, would be to start nursing again.
Supplement the formula with breastmilk and see if that helps.  If
nursing isn't an option then I'd try a soy formula or (2nd choice) a
hypoallergenic formula.  (The hypoallergenic ones contain the cow's milk
protein casein, but it's been modified to make it easier to digest.  Not
good for a baby with a true mil allergy, but a good bet for a baby for
whom the protein only causes gastric distress.)

By the way, if you decide that the milk protein WAS, indeed, the
trouble, be aware that an excess of milk products may produce similar
symptoms for years.  My younger son can only tolerate a bit of milk in
his dietor else he gets serious gastric problems.  And it's NOT lactose
intolerance, which causes the runs rather than constipation!

I hope this helps,

I hate to disagree with Beth because I know she is very knowledgable
about milk allergy, and an excellent information resource.  However, I
did have an infant with a non-IgE-mediated allergy to milk protein,
which caused gastro-intestinal symptoms (GE reflux and bloody stool).
His doctor told us that most infants with *this type* of milk protein
sensitivity do better on the hypoallergenic formula (with the
hydrolized casein) than on a soy formula, because the casein in the
hypoallergenic formula is broken down far enough not to trigger the
reaction, but some large percentage (I forget the numbers now, this was
8 years ago) of children with this type of milk protein sensitivity
also have a soy protein sensitivity.  Indeed we were able to later
confirm that my son was also allergic to soy.  We used the hypoallergenic
formula part-time while I adjusted my diet to remove his allergens, at
which point I was able to successfully resume breastfeeding full-time.

I am missing the OP, so I'm not sure how relevant my experience/information
is, but I thought it was worth putting out there.

--Robyn (btw, he outgrew all his allergies by 15mos -- this was also
as predicted by his doctors based on his symptoms)

It could be the ARA/DHA in the "Lipil" formula.  Try finding a can of
regular Enfamil.  I know that my DS had a lot of problems with gas
while he was on the brands with ARA/DHA.
