Ride-on/walk-behind toy ...
If it makes too much noise you'll regret it, so avoid things with sirens
and bells.
Our boys both LOVED the ride-on ones for years. (We got a plastic
schoolbus at our neighborhood "trash and treasures" weekend.) The
push-behind ones were popular when they were very tiny, but by the age
of about 2 they had completely lost interest. The ride-ons were in use
until about the age of 4 or so when they got tiny bicycles with training
wheels.
Beyond that, no specific advice. --Beth Kevles

Both girls liked both ride ons and push behinds. The baby (16 months)
adores her sister's doll stroller that we got for 7$ at Target (but
she's been walking for ages). They both like to push dolls in strollers
or on the ride on toys.

The Fisher Price one with the popping balls in the front is my
dgs's favorite toy. It's sturdy and it can be pushed easily. He
actually pushes it now with a 5 lb weight in the compartment
of the seat. It's good for riding and it also is good for putting
little toys inside the seat.
Here's a picture of it:

Interestingly, I can't find it on the FP website

I had these for my kids. They had a black plastic locomotive, and
also a little horse on wheels. They also had a bouncing horse (which
dd didn't like at first), and the push toy with the popping balls. I
gave the Winnie the Pooh one push toy to one of my grandsons and his
mom complained about the noise.
I had a LOT of difficulty finding these push toys seven years ago to
buy them for my grandchildren.

We got this for my son's 1st birthday:

It's a big hit!
He loves to sit in it and be pushed around, or he puts Teddy in it and
pushes him around, it's a little too heavy to turn corners but the
weight is useful, it doesn't fly out from under him when he's getting up
behind it. It's hopefully going to last for a while, it was not cheap
but I went for quality and longevity (I hope) and I just couldn't have
another piece of noise making plastic - eek!

My daughter loves the Little Tikes Car.
The one we have has a push handle, a removable floor, and a lockable
door. It was perfect for taking her in walks in as an alternative to
the stroller. Now that she's older (2) the floor is taken out, the
handle is off and she moves it around outside herself. We kept in
mostly inside, except for the walks in dry weather, until the past
summer.

My daughter has a Playskool Step Start Walk and Ride. She always liked
pushing it around as she learned to walk and now she will ride it as a
car. It has a little compartment to put things in and she really likes
to hide stuff in there. I really like how it's two toys in one.
