Hi -
I am going to be renting a car for a long road trip this summer with
two small children in car seats. We need a BIG car (those rear facing
seats take up TONS of leg room space!) with lots of leg room and lots
of cargo space. The wider the car, the better. The longer the car,
the better!
Both mini vans and mid to full size SUVs are a lot of money to rent, so
a very large full size sedan may be our best bet. But we're going
camping and need lots of cargo room, too.
Any vehicle suggestions? I know car rental companies can't guarantee a
particular vehicle (only a class of vehicle) so our only sure bet may
be renting a full-size SUV....anyone know who rents these more cheaply
(I will be renting in Canada)?
Thanks!

I'd be surprised if you couldn't fit two rear-facing car seats in a
full-sized American sedan. We rented a Mercury Montego (same as a Ford Five
Hundred) and it had a positively cavernous back seat. We could have fit
THREE rear-facing car seats back there!
While it's hard to know for sure what model of car you'd get when renting a
full-sized sedan in Canada, I doubt you'd have a problem. You might want to
shop the different agencies to see which makes/models they offer in the
full-size sedan class, but my bet is you'll be fine with a full-size sedan
and don't really need an SUV.

If you can find one to rent, try to find a scion xB, they are funny looking
but will fit 2 car seats, w/ quite a bit of cargo room. The problem will
be finding one to rent.

"Funny looking"? Hah! My toaster-on-wheels is beautiful.
We've taken it camping, and it can get a bit crowded -- but so long as
the people in the back seat are in car seats, it should be fine. We pack
sleeping bags, etc. there and put harder stuff in the back.

hehe.... I didn't say I didn't have one ;)
I just regret getting mine a couple of months too early, I would have LOVED
the salsa red that just came out.

We got the silver specifically because it looks like a toaster (and even
more like a bread machine, we've realized). The white ones look like
tipped-over washing machines...
I think it's funny how their marketing is all hip and young, but
everyone I see driving them is at least in their thirties.

My father (73 years old) drives an orange boxy Honda Pilot ...
with flames on the sides.
My 16 year old daughter drives a sky blue Scion tC. I bet it stands for
tiny Coupe. She loves it.

We rented a Dodge Intrepid last summer, the back seat was big
enough to hold a full back booster, a Britax roundabout and
me. The trunk was huge! all of our luggage, my brother's
luggage and the stroller.
This past Christmas we rented a Taurus which was had a
surprisingly big trunk. The carseats wouldn't be an issue
in that either.

Hertz (and probably others) gives passenger/luggage counts for each class of
car. You'd want one which holds at least 4 if not 5 adults and equivalent
luggage. The nice thing about Hertz is that when they've been sold out of
our class of car, they upgrade to the next highest level-which is why we
ended up with a small SUV in California (and after having one for a week, I
can see why people like them).

I didn't know you could rent a car with two small children.
Most parents just bring their own kids. ;-)

In the US, Hertz will guarentee a particular model, at least if you are a
Hertz #1 club member. Not sure about other car rental companies or out of
the US. I don't know if there are extra fees to go with this, either.

Make sure that the rental company *knows* you will be having two babies
in car seats - that way if they have to change the vehicle you will get,
they should change it to another suitable one.
