Hi, can anyone help me diagnose what's going on with my little boy who
just turned 4 months. When I breast feed him, he used to empty both
sides at one feeding, but starting a few days ago, he only ate one
side, and pushed it away when I tried to get him to eat the 2nd one. A
short while later, he become fussy again, obviously because of hunger.
Do any parents experience similar episode before and know why and how
to solve the problem? Thanks a lot.

What's the problem? Honestly, 4mos are weird. Who knows why they do weird
feeding things. Is he wetting enough diapers and pooping and such?

Good luck!

If he isn't sick or he hasn't just had a vaccination shot my first guess
would be that he could have sore gums from teething. As long as his nappies
are wet and he continues to thrive the more but frequent shorter feeds will
inconvenience you more than him, I'm afraid! It's a while since I dealt with
a teething baby but you could try giving him a cold face cloth to chew on or
a special teething toy and see if a tooth pops through soon.

He might have been thirsty rather than hungry, and just had a drink.  On the
other hand, he might just be changing his habits.  You might want to ask
further questions in misc.kids.breastfeeding -- there are a lot of helpful
people there.

my baby eats the same way during the day, but at night he'll empty
both breasts.  i always thought this was because at night when he
empties both breasts he goes into a "milk coma" (what we call it in my
house), but during the day i think he wants to stay awake so he just
snacks.  it is frustrating for the both of us, because i don't always
realize that he wants to snack again so i don't troubleshoot
accurately (plus i get annoyed whipping out my boob every 5 minutes).
i have found it helpful to pump some breast milk and have the bottle
handy... (that is, if he's taking a bottle)
if he's making enough diapers i wouldn't worry.
