I just spent a few minutes reporting some of the spammers on this
board... not sure if it will do any good.   Is there anything else
besides reporting it that can be done?

get a newsreader with a good filter.
you are reading through googlegroups, which has to be the
*worst* way possible to read Usenet.
there are excellent dedicated newsreaders, some of which are
free & some you can buy. i use xNews, which is free.
you can use Outlook Express to read news, & it's a step up
from reading googlegroups but nowhere as good as an actual
newsreader.
if msn doesn't have a NNTP server, there are a few free
servers, & several excellent pay subscription servers out
there you can use.
i do see a few spam posts, but not more than 5-6 per week.

Last night while sitting in my chair
I pinged a host that wasn't there
It wasn't there again today
The host resolved to NSA.

Killfiles.  That's about it.

Is there a way to killfile the stupid watch spam? It's coming under so many
different emails.

Of course when I saw 1 spam from them I didn't even consider buying from a
watch. Now I've seen upwards of 200 messages I suddenly feel compelled to
buy ;-P

Killfile on "rolex" in subjects lines of all newsgroups.

Of course now they're putting entire messages just in the subject line, and
they're varying spellings.  One problem I have is that it sometimes gets down to
what to filter out that wouldn't filter out real messages (you woudn't want to
filter out "watch", for example).

So sometimes it gets down to using what I call "the real life killfile" -
ignoring the ones that are left.

I killfile in certain words in the message.  For instance I just made
a killfile on "paypal accept" but  price or buy or deal would be other
possibilities.  As Banty pointed out watch might not be a good word.
And if I killfile the person who posts where they change something in
their name (john96 and then john95) then I killfile the ISP that they
say that are using.

Killfile anything with gmail, googlemail, yahoo.com.cn, and hotmail in the
address. Killfile any poster using googlegroups. Killfile messages by
keyword such as watches, replica, etc.
I miss posts from actual people (such as the OP, who is using googlegroups)
but they're not worth all the spam I'd be getting otherwise.

Yes you would - you've set up a way exclusive set of killfiles.  New posters
often use things like gmail and yahoo, and killfiling things like "watch" means
you cut out posts that talk about, say, having a big brother watch a little
brother in the playground.

So I tolerate some 'leakyness' in the killfiles, and just scan over the ones
that remain.  And set up killfiles according to what I see there if they get to
be too much.

If these kids of posts get a response from a regular, then I'll see them.

I post via Google Groups, and so do a lot of other real people here.
Many others use gmail, hotmail, etc.  If you killfile all of us, it
seems to me you might as well not bother reading the group.

I think reporting the spam does help, somewhat.  When I am in the mood
I go on a reporting streak.
