This is what i have learned in life and relationships:

-- SILENCE IS GOLDEN

It comes much easier with phlegmatic temperaments,
unfortunately.  But it's worth a try to listen more than to talk.
You will understand the other person and yourself better.

peace,

I'm getting good at this, but I have to practice because I am
not a phlegmatic person.  I am very open and optmistic and
love to have fun in conversations and discover things together.
I don't like one-upmanship conversations and competition.
It's important to understand the character of the person you are
speaking to.
In order to keep things harmonious, it takes work and self-control.
Giving the other person the freedom to express their
opinion with no objections is the best, with habitual nay-sayers.
I am determined to keep peace and harmony in my life.
Everyone is different and has their own tastes and temperament.
It takes practice and nothing is gained in disagreements for
the sake of sparring except self-aggrandizement.

Well, there IS some social interaction.  So I'm not sure it's necessarily
quite as black and white as you seem to portray it here.  And you seem to be
implying or assuming here that there is a bit of malice (I might lump
"self-aggrandizement" in there).   I just don't necessarily agree with that,
as a carte blanche assessment.   Some people just like to debate their own
positions on things.

(But I will agree that there has been some of what you say in here, too,
Erin)

No malice intended -- just understanding and recognition of
how to keep conversations as conversations and not
debates that accelerate into fights.  There are different types
of subjects and the academic/political/scientific are not
as volatile as personal ones.  I'm trying to change the personal
style.

Well, that would be nice.   And they say "hope springs eternal".    But does
it really?   I think the jury is still out on that one.

the triumph of hope over experience; why do you think people
are religious? :-)

To believe in something Above Them, to help give them some meaning and
purpose to Life.

Well, i'm not hoping for something Above Me, but something within
me (above the neck:-)) that will improve my life.  That's sort of
religious, if you have faith in yourself.
