3 weeks ago we got new tires for the van.  Less than a week later we
heard a 'rubbing' noise so I took the van back to have them check to
make sure everything was okay, or if there was more work needing to be
done.

Well, I was told, "We *think* it's the brakes".  Whaaaaaat?!  So I
called a mechanic we'd taken other cars to, to set an appt. to get the
starter replaced, which needed to be done anyways.

Over the weekend, the noise got much worse and hubby was thinking it
could be the cv joint.  So when I took the van to have the work done I
asked the mechanic to check it and let me know if it needed to be
replaced.

Oh yeah, and we decided to get the front brakes done since he'd have
it as well.

Imagine my shock when the mechanic calls me up and tells me the right
front wheel was loose!  He was able to remove the lug nuts by hand!!

OMG, I am livid!  I've been taking cars to this tire dealer for years,
as did my dad when he was alive.  I cannot believe they didn't even
check that when I had it in for the noise, after getting the tires.

I called the owner and he's apologetic and  is sending us a check for
small compensation which is nice but I can't get the pictures of
having the entire wheel come off my van while driving my children!

And my argument for taking it to this dealer against hubby's desire to
go to Wallyworld (no offense to anyone, but I refuse to allow minimum
wage workers to take the wheels off my car and trust them to do it
right) was that Wallyworld once didn't tighten the lugnuts on dh's van
several years ago.

Argh.

Absolutely!  What helped calm me down is the owner being so apologetic
and offering no excuses for what happened.  Hey, if only that horrible
doctor I had for A's c-section would have been so understanding I'd
not still hate him!

Wowwww! That is NOT acceptable. You definitely had SOMEONE watching over
you!

I would be just as angry! There's no excuse for that- especially for them to
miss it TWICE.

I'm sure he's only sending you the money because he hopes it will ice it
enough for you so you don't sue. In today's lawsuit-happy world, that kind
of thing would absolutely make for a solid lawsuit. Not that I am promoting
that at all, just saying that it's very common these days.

I know you have a solid relationship with the tire place but don't let that
soften the situation any. I'd be reporting them to the BBB at the very
least. Good luck!

Well, that's possible.  But we didn't suffer any damages even if it
was kind of scary.  He offered to pay for the subsequent repairs we
had, but it was work that needed to be done in spite of the wheel
issue.

I probably won't.  This dealer has been a fixture in town with a good
reputation for several decades.  He explained that last time this had
happened 12 years ago he made a policy of having 2 technicians check
the lugnuts.  Mistakes can happen, but it's a scary thought.

Nope.  There was no accident, no financial loss, no basis for lawsuit.

Doesn't necessarily have to be an accident- contract, implied contract, etc.
don't require losses. As always, it depends on the state you are in.

when I met my dh he had an old TR7. It would frequesntly break down and
I learned a lot about car mechanics. One Easter he offered to give me a
lift to my parents (a couple of hundred miles away I suppose) The car
headgasket blew. We spent an entire weekend in the pouring rain changing
it and sorting the whole thing out. Turned up at my parents a couple of
days late!

*g* This is a reason why I am quite happy to have married a salesperson
- when I need his advice, it's in the course of my job, and I get an
answer fast, normally. Otherwise I learned the same job anyway, so if
it's something related to us, I know the answer as well as he does. ;-)

Only to get him to exercise his skills in reparing things... *sigh* I
know he has them, he knows I know, and he knows I am more stubborn than
he. Sadly he needs to have prove of these facts far too often for my
liking. ;-)

How the hell did that happen? They put them on with a pneumatic wrench,
its not as if they're put on by hand.

I don't know  what the equivalent is over there, but I'd give Trading
Standards a nod if it happened here. You where lucky, the next driver
might not be.

That's how it's done here.  He said his policy is to have 2 people
check the lug nuts before finishing the job so I don't know how mine
slipped through the crack.

every time i've taken any vehicle in to get tires (or get the
snows put on/off) i have been told "check the lug nuts when
you get home to make sure they are tight." every time, over 6
vehicles & 30+ years... both from the dealers & from the guys
at NTB.
they can't crank the lug nuts down too hard with the air gun
or they'll strip the bolts, so they tighten them just over
hand tight. however, it's possible for the lugs to loosen, so
you should check after about an hours worth of driving. if
they're loose enough to turn easily, tighten them back up (you
do have a jack with a tire iron in your vehicle, don't you?)

Yeah, I do.  I was figuring that someone in the business of removing
tires would do it right.

lug nuts can & do loosen. it's something you should be in the
habit of checking every so often, but especially after getting
the tires changed. it's not a matter of them "doing it wrong"
really. i always check mine when i get home from the tire shop
or the garage if they've done anything involving removing
tires (inspection brake checks for example). i check them
before i start a long trip. i check them again after a few k
miles.
do you check your oil & fluids, & tire pressure or do you
just wait until something goes wrong to have the garage tell
you you ran out of something?
i've never had a vehicle not last me over 10 years or 250+k
miles... except the Taurus & that's because some stupid old
man ran into it when it only had 170k.

Honestly, it's not something that would occur to me to check, and I've
never been told by the tire dealer that I should.

i wonder why they don't. i really do find that strange & not in
a good way.

i sort of was, but i was also using a more general 'you' rather
than the specific you.

it also is part of my bafflement at education (& this is
carrying over from another list i read). while i agree that
reading & math are important, we're not teaching our kids about
self-reliance, self-responsibility, civics & civic
responsibility, consumer awareness... any number of real life
things they'll *really* need.

I find it strange that you'd be told to check yours.  It's one of
those things I expect to be done correctly.

I don't equate checking the fluid levels in my car with needing to
double check to make sure a business did their job correctly.

I agree consumer awareness is vitally important, but as I said, this
isn't something I would have thought I need to double check.

because they *can* loosen just driving the vehicle & they
don't want people driving long with loose lug nuts. i check
mine every few months, & retighten as needed. it's not
necessarily a matter of the mechanics not doing their job
properly. as i said before, you can only crank the nuts on to
a certain point with those air drivers or you'll strip the
threads on the bolt. that point is not tight enough for the
bolts to stay completely tight in some cases. a good mechanic
will hand tighten the lugs as far as he can by hand (after
using the air driver) *and* remind you to check them when you
get home.
checking lugs should be part of a general check of car safety
before starting a trip, along with checking fluid levels, tire
pressure, checking the belts for wear, making sure the jumper
cables, tire change kit, & first aid kit are all in place.

but i'm pretty sure this isn't taught anymore, so...

> I don't equate checking the fluid levels in my car with

well, since you insist it's because they aren't doing their
job (& i'll agree that if they aren't telling you to check
when you get home, they aren't), maybe you should start
checking to be sure they are? since this has happened to you
twice maybe it's just prudent?

> I agree consumer awareness is vitally important, but as I
> said, this isn't something I would have thought I need to

you should, really. i don't trust anyone to take my safety as
seriously as i do :)

as far as consumer awareness (again not being specific you,
but this is *really* bugging me) have you read the fine print
on credit card offers lately? one late payment & interest
rates go over 30%? or those 'paycheck loan' places that figure
interest so it can get as high as 100%. that's insane & it
ought to fall under usuary laws. no wonder the poor get
poorer! sheesh! (yes, this is my latest bitch at my
congresscritters thing. it should be illegal to prey on
consumers like that)

That doesn't happen to be the same one it has in German? ;-)

Now I have to look anal up with leo, I somehow assumed the meaning in

Just so you know, most ppl don't use that word so freely in the US either.
I don't take any issue w/ it being used, it's just not used day to day
conversation in most homes.

:-), I think it's more a question of a certain number of people using it on
TV, don't know if that's because there no synonym for it (is there?) or just
because some of them have this whole 'oh look what ambiguous word I can use
freely on TV' thing going on ;-).
