Well the British government has really done well this time. Lost two
disks containing the personal details of all families with children
under age of 16. Thats bank records, national insurance numbers,
addresses, anything pertinent to recieving child benefit.

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7103566.stm

Apparently they used a courier to carry the two disks for auditing,
the package wasn't recorded or registered. It never arrived.

So I guess all us brits will be checking our accounts thoroughly for
quite a while.

/shudders to think of the wider ranging implications - security anyone?

And just to add this happened on the 18th Oct, senior management were
told on the 8th Nov and the Chancellor on the 10th Nov. So, how much
damage could already have happened?

This happened awhile back to some government employees this side of the pond
when a couple of laptops were stolen with all the information on it. It
apparently included information with regards to paycheck direct deposit,
social security numbers, etcetera. The worst part was that it happened and
no one was notified for a couple of months. That makes it almost impossible
to be proactive huh? We have been watching our checking and taxation records
etcetera for ages.

I hope nothing bad comes of this for you and yours.

We are in California. Formerly we were in Memphis.

I ask because the same exact thing just happened here in CT. Laptops with
all tax info were stolen from an employees car and CT residents didn't know
until months after. There was big question on why the employee took the
laptops off of state property to begin with.

My biggest miff with these events is that there appears to be "no
explanation" for why these events happened and they aren't reported for
ages. Makes me wonder if they are happening more and there just isn't any
truth going around in reporting it to the public. There were not any
reported rashes of identity theft with these reports so it makes you think
that the thief was only after the computer and not after the possible
information stored. Those whose information was stolen are very very lucky
indeed.

IIRC, it was sensitive info about current, former and retired military
members.  My ds and dh have been watching everything closely.

You are probably correct Nan. It effected us since he worked for the IRS,
and is a veteran of the Air Force. That kind of information just wandering
off to be used by who knows who for who knows what scares me.
