in my ongoing efforts at getting rid of "stuff", i have decided
that several collections of magazines need to go. is there a
'market' for old magazines, or somewhere to recycle them? i
really hate the idea of them ending in a landfill, as i know the
glossy pages don't break down very rapidly & i'm not sure the
inks are very enviromentally friendly.

Well, I am not familiar with the market for second hand stuff in the US, but
I *am* familiar with the situation in the Netherlands. I have been
decluttering since long before my moving house (and I moved in December
2006) and /still/ I have stuff that I want to get rid of. I try to sell as
much of it, not so much for environmental reasons, as for financial ones
;-). I have sold plenty of magazines online, usually at good prices. I'm
sure advertising on Ebay or the likes would attract interested parties,
otherwise you might consider asking libraries if they would be interested. I
know the Rotterdam library has plenty of magazines dating back decades. When
the year is through they bind them into a book cover, so they keep very
well.

Some times schools or homes for the elderly welcome things like this.
Or any place that might use the pictures for craft projects.  A few
phone calls might give you a better idea where.

Freecycle, a homeless shelter or a women's center would be good places
to start.  My dad got rid of several decades of National Geographic by
donating them to the local homeless shelter.

Our library takes them and sells them for 10 to 25 cents apiece in
their booksale which is an ongoing thing.  They have a cart and sell
books and magazines continually.
