You can't write about that

DD was supposed to write a "note to the editor" as a school project.
And that particular teacher - knowing DD kept a close eye on her. So
first DD was going to write about the thing that upsets her most - the
feder deficit and public debt. But the teacher took the paper away
from her and said "You can't write about that - you cannot write about
anything that makes the government look bad" So DD started to write
about cameras in school everywhere and the schools being locked all
day and one needing special permission to enter and that that is a way
to sell fear and to attempt to achieve compliance by selling fear. So
the teacher ripped that up and told her "You can't write about that
You cannot say anything that makes our town look bad". So DD had to
finish her project in her free period and she wrote about a particular
teacher and how it upsets her that nothing is being tought in that
class. So the teacher ripped that one up and said "You can't write
about that you cannot make any teacher look bad" So she got 20 points
deducted for "missing the subject a bit",

She got another 20 points deducted on another one of those projects
that was titled "Being a patriot ...". The teacher told her "Knowing
you don't write about the deficit or the cameras just write about our
wonderful constitution. So she started her essay:

Being a patriot I feel the obligation to dedicate myself to the
resurection of the spirit in which the wonderful constitution of this
once great nation was crafted and to the eradication of the hypocrisy
so prevelant in todays society.

At which point the teacher said "I am not even going to read the rest
I am sure there are no spelling mistakes and a lot of big words - but
I am deducting 20 points" and tore the paper up.

Luckely those assignments only account for 10 % of the grade so it
dropped her from a 99 to a 95

Well and then there are some teachers who just love her writings, read
them to the whole class as an example and ask her if they can keep
them. Guess her writings are either very much appreciated or extremly
disliked.

it's a little late this year, but as a parent you can demand
that your DD be moved to a more appropriate teacher's class.
if a teacher is obviously out to "get" the student, a class
transfer will make everyone happier.
also, you might want to introduce your DD to the ACLU. they'd
*love* to make a free speech example of that teacher :)

which proves that the teacher stifling her writings is a
mismatch & she should be placed in a different class. it's a
pity you can't get her into advanced placement or even college
classes...

Last night while sitting in my chair
I pinged a host that wasn't there
It wasn't there again today
The host resolved to NSA.

This school system does not allow skipping grades and she does all the
"advanced" stuff available. Regarding the teacher.. well I feel that
DD will have to content with incompatible people in life and that this
could be a learning experience. And I told her so. I let it go as far
as it does not do any serious damage. As the grading goes... The
emphasis is on the work books and the questions in there - so pretty
straight forward. And each one of those tests has a bonus so most of
the time dd gets a 105  or so. So those deductions might be the
difference of her getting a 100 or a 96 in the report card. anything
above 90 is an A so IMO it does not make a difference and it gives her
the opportunity to deal with those kind of people. Besides - she
starts a "fight" with someone - even if it is "just intelectual" let
her handle it on her own. Daddy is going to step in if it gets too
dangerous or she is in way over her head

Good to have you back, I was wondering why I didn't see you in here.
I love reading about your daughter! She is very courageous and
outspoken, and I simply loved how she dealt with that award she was given.
It is a pity that her teacher is after her so much and desperately
trying to one-up a girl less than half her age, but I also admire your
stand about this. This year will surely teach her something about people
and how to deal with them.
