She was actually near Cape Canaveral.
I was in Jacksonville.
Don't know much about the Melbourne area. My brother had a friend that lived there, though.

I know she used to live in that neck of the woods, because she used to post about watching the rockets take off.

Hmmm..... does the fact that you've looked at houses mean you might become a transplant?

The housing market here has come to a standstill as well. I think the biggest difference is the exchange rate, with the pound so strong against the dollar at the moment, I can get more for my money over there.
> >> Hmmm..... does the fact that you've looked at houses mean [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > not that we should discourage Scrum from moving to the > states, but not Florida. The possibilty of moving has crossed my mind more than once, but the biggest problem I have is with my job. I'm not on the tools so much anymore, and what we do is pretty specialised. A large chunk of the reason I've sort of been promoted is the fact that I have a far better understanding of not just work and products, but also the Building Regs. To go over there and do the job I do now would mean learning US building code pretty much from scratch.

I like to watch the house-flipping shows. I'm always glad when someone makes some good money, but I'm with you when they aren't experienced and do a lot of dumb things that result in a loss.

They tend to shut down construction jobs in the winter months.

What I'd like to know is, most houses in the USA are made from wood, and every year we hear of bush fires and peoples homes being burnt down. Isn't there something the building code that says anything about fire-proof paint?

You know, that makes sense. I live in an area that's not prone to wildfires but it's a good question.
We live in Tornado Alley, though.

You would have to not only learn US building codes and regs - but in FL you would have to learn all the hurricane codes that are getting more and more stringent as the years go by.
I love FL - and you wouldn't get me to move away from here. Now is definately a good time to buy, houses are cheap and prices are still dropping. Forclosure rates are high. Construction (especially roadway and commercial) still abound down here so it depends on where your construction expertise lays as to the availablity of jobs. I work closely with the whole construction/development area and although we have seen a slowdown, (a MUCH needed market correction) we are still getting by. The company has downsized by 20% this year - but that is nothing compared to many other development firms that have gone belly up.
I have friends who lived in Melbourne for several years. (there are a few good schools over there). I have not been over there in years though. Nice place - close to the Atlantic side. (I'm a gulf - west (left) coast - girl).

You know that big fire at Universal? If they'd had me there before that started I could have prevented it from happening :)
But buying a house there has intrigued me. House prices there are low, and the pound is very strong against the dollar. So buying a house there now would have the double gain when the market picks up, and the dollar recovers, and both will given time.

I think that if this is something you are seriously considering, then don't just concentrate on Florida. With housing prices the way they are atm, you would definately get more house for your money if you stay away from the "tourist" areas. Tourist states are going to cost more than others. Also, where you buy in a state can also have a big impact on the cost of a house. In Idaho you can get almost 2x the house for the same amount of money than you would get in Florida. In Boise, you can get an awesome house for around $200,000.00 while in Star and Kuna, about 30 minuets outside of Boise the same houses will cost even less and may also come with a good sized piece of land.
If its beaches you're looking for you have so many options. Florida has 2 coasts. Most southeastern beaches are pretty "tame". The farther north you go the more "wild" the beaches get. The same goes for beaches on the west coast of the US. Those are quite a bit more wild than east coast beaches due to the way the beaches just kinda drop off closer to shore. Bigger waves, rougher seas, but for the most part no hurricanes to speak of.
Just some food for thought.

Chatting over t'internet is one thing, in real life its another. We have enough in common to make that connection, but enough differences to make it interesting. If it wasn't for the fact that neither of us have any holiday time left this year we'd be seeing each other a lot sooner :(

Isn't > there something the building code that says anything about fire-proof > paint? The USA is vast, and encompasses many different climates and terrains. Bush fires, while spectacular, destructive, and newsworthy, only occur in small parts of the US, and these tend to be in areas that are very desirable to live in (California, Nevada, Arizona, generally in the western United States, but can also occur in other parts of the US when drought conditions are present). In much of the US, wildfires aren't much of an issue.
Building codes also vary widely.
