took Scout out for his morning walk down the driveway & there
a young (relatively, about 25 years old) snapping turtle
digging a nest in the garden edge along the driveway.
she laid about a dozen eggs & is now safely back across the
street to her pond.
when she was done i tagged her shell with blue spray paint so
i can keep an eye on her. it's likely she'll be back next
spring to lay another clutch.
we'll be setting up a protective area around the nest to keep
raccoons & skunks from digging up & eating the eggs.
eventually, when i get the film developed, there will be
pictures :)

Please do! That'd've been so cool to watch!

she started digging a bit before 7am, & was done by 9:30 am.
her refilling of the hole was a bit haphazard ;)
i walked with her across the street, in case i needed to stop
traffic, but Saturday mornings tend not to have a lot of idiot
speeders (especially since Camp Yavnah isn't open yet). we've
set logs around the nest, & will be putting up a bit more of a
barrier to mauraders later today. the location gets a lot of
sun, so i expect hatchlings sometime in August.

Do they head for the pond like loggerhead babies head for the ocean?

well, that's the theory...
i have Gamera because he got 'lost' on his (her) way to the
pond, or rather wandered around on the road too long & became
severely dehydrated. if my nephew hadn't gone out for a bike
ride & found Gamera, it would have died. i gave it water, then
some lettuce (the hatchlings are pretty much vegetarian for
the first year, except for small snails & maybe some bugs).
Gamera will be 4 in August & is about the size of an adult
male's palm.
but, yeah, the little turtles will head toward water. i'll be
keeping an eye out though because to get to mom's pond
requires crossing a road. i'd prefer they go to my pond or the
wetlands in the back, so i may transport them in that
direction if i get a chance. safer than crossing a street.
hatchling snappers are about the size of a US quarter, not
something most drivers would notice.

Yeah, that happens with loggerheads, too.   Around here, there are teams
of volunteers who patrol the beaches every day from May to October,
trying to make sure the nests are protected and the little ones make it
to the water.

Yuck! Hubby and the boys caught one in our creek a couple weeks ago. I took
a video of it before they let it go.
It smelled terrible and it had parasites all over it.
Last year one was walking up the driveway, we hustled it out of there on a
snow shovel before it advanced on my shubunkin pond.

leeches? this one had one leech on her shell, but we don't
have a lot of leeches in the pond. i don't know why the one
you found smelled bad, unless the creek is nasty. they may
have a faint fishy odor, but it shouldn't be very noticable.

mmm. fish dinner.
i can see why you wouldn't want one in your fancy goldfish
pond... Gamera can down 2 dozen rosy minnows in less than 20
minutes. he eats feeder goldfish, but likes the minnows
better. his favorite is crayfish though.

i love snapping turtles.

This one had maggoty worm-like creatures stuck to its front legs.  I read
that they will emit musk , urinate and/or defecate when caught, and that's
pretty much what it smelled like.  They took it back to the creek, and a
week later it was still there hanging out under the bridge, where there are
chubs, sunnies, and crayfish..

I don't wish them ill, though I'm not particularly fond of them!

The video is pretty crappy, I know!
