Has anyone had experience with their kids having small sores at the
corners of their mouths?  Two of my kids suddenly developed them in
the past week and they seem painful.  They seem similar to the
pictures of "perleche" that I've seen online. I'm planning on calling
the doctor today, but sometimes mothers have more reliable answers
than doctors. :)  What will help these sores go away?  Thanks!

Canker sores perhaps or cold sores? My oldest gets cold sores every now and
then.

They're not cold sores or canker sores -- they're on the outside of
the corners of their mouths, kind of like they're "extending" their
mouths, and they're open sores.  I've seen cold sores and these look
different, plus they're on both sides of the mouth.  Thanks for
replying, though!

Have they been eating Mr. Freezies?, the corners of the plastic when their
eating it tend to cut the corners of your mouth....my friends son had sores
on both sides of his mouth and it was spreading because he would keep
touching it (because it was bothering him)...the doctor told her that this
was the case....not sure if thats what it is but thats one thing which can
cause it.

HAve they been eating a lot of fruit lately?
It could be a reaction to fruit acids.

If they have been playing in the dirt, it could be
bacteria from the dirt.

I have seen what you describe on kids, both summer and winter,
but never knew what it was.  My kids never had it.

I've seen impetigo look like what you described. If both kids have it, it's
probably something contagious, which "perleche" is not.

Oh, it's not?  I had no idea -- I've never dealt with mouth sores
before.  Thanks for clearing that up (no pun intended!)

Has it been dry where  you are lately?  Its entirely possible that their
lips are dry and chapped and the corners are splitting when they open their
mouths wide i.e. taking a bite of something, yawning, laughing and smiling.
You could try putting chap stick or moisturizer on them.  HTH

Hi Bryna,

Yes, if it is not cold sores, I had something similar as a child. In my
case it was caused by a combination of stress / poor diet. Contagious
and difficult to get rid off. Basically, you need to let it scab over,
and the scab fall of by itself. Virtually impossible for anyone under
10. I am positive a doctor would have something to help it heal sooner,
my mum used mercurachrome.

Yikes -- I'm waiting for a call-back from the doctor's office and hope
there will be an easy remedy.  My kids have a pretty good diet,
though, and I don't think they're under too much stress (the two-year-
old is being toilet-trained, but that's just stressful for *me*!) -- I
wonder what could be causing it.  Thanks!
