So now that I can post again, I thought I'd update everyone who has been
waiting breathlessly for the next pearls....hahaha

Actually, not much is going on.  The girls are back in school (7th and 8th)
and love it, they like schedules as much as I do.  Caroline made the middle
school softball team so she has been practicing daily.  Clare is doing the
same with her tumbling/cheering.  I am back to part time again at work since
our census is down (good for the general public, bad for business...I work
in hospice) and I am busy redoing the bathroom, a little at a time.

Currently making dinner and happy happy happy that I can post again....Beth

I find it very weird that kids go back to school before Labor Day!  We don't
even get the class assignments and schedules until the last week in August.
I have a 5th grader in elementary school, a 10th grader in high school, and
a freshman in college, and they all start classes on Sept. 3rd.
We haven't even gone on vacation yet!

i think it's stupid to start classes before Labor Day. we
were just told told Boo's school starts Aug. 26. we had
already made plans a month ago to meet an online friend from
Australia for a train ride (Conway Scenic Railroad, the dinner
train to Bartlett) later in that week. so, he'll go to school
one day & then miss one or two days... stupid, but we're not
changing our plans.
besides, what's the point of a couple days of school, then a
long weekend? that makes 2 short weeks where nothing gets
accomplished anyway. it's a big part of what makes the whole
mandated 180 days of school a joke.

They don't have to give out a schedule earlier that that?  At least we have
the whole next year's schedule before school is out the previous year.

Sounds like Boo will get more out of the train ride and meeting friends from
the other side of the world than school.  Last year we went to Mexico and
the girls missed one day of school....one of those bogus half days...and we
let then know ahead of time why, plus we went to the Aztec Museum and took
photos of ruins and brought back stuff to share, as they were studying the
Aztec and Mayan culture.  And they got unexcused absences!!  Even though I
went twice to the 'graduation coach' to discuss it.
ridiculous

no, they don't. he's in a Montessori school, & this year he's
starting at a different one, but i've never had more than 3
weeks notice before the start of school.
and this summer has been rather messed up with surgery &
radiation therapy, so i'm NOT ready for school to start. i
have mose projects i wanted to get done with Boo :p

yet another reason i won't use public schools. we're planning
a trip to Ireland/Scotland in a year or so. it may stretch
into a 6 month or longer 'world tour'... i realize public
schools really frown on that sort of broadening of the child's
world view... better to get a dry *old* textbook view,
don'tcha know.

We moved from the east coast where custom was to start school the
Wednesday after Labor Day and finish around June 25.

Living in Colorado, school starts here the last week in August and
finishes around June 5.  The last week of October is vacation, plus two
weeks at Christmas, the last week in March, and various Monday holidays.
State law mandates 180 days of school.

Unfortunately people don't think to check when moving here during the
summer and new kids come to register all the way till mid September,
putting them 3 weeks behind in all their classes, and causing
overcrowded classes because it's so hard to anticipate numbers when
classes are set the spring before.

That's a shame, messes things up for everybody, especially the kids.  Who
would move someplace without checking out the schools first???  You would
think that would be priority one.

Lucky!  It seems that August was always the best month of summer when I was
young, now it is fall as far as my kids are concerned.  They get out of
school around May 20, with 2 week long breaks plus a week for Thanksgiving,
2 weeks for Christmas, and lots of bogus half days where they eat lunch at
0930 and get out at 11....so the school gets federal money for showing a
movie and handing out a bag lunch.  grrr
