More than six thousand people have been killed and thousands more are
missing, after the most powerful earthquake in 40 years rocked Indonesia.
It triggered giant tidal waves that slammed into coastlines across Asia.
The quake is the fifth largest ever recorded, measuring 8.9 on the
Richter scale.
It struck in the Indian Ocean off Aceh province on Sumatra island,
unleashing tsunamis that hit Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Indonesia, the
Maldives, Burma and Malaysia.
Terrifying walls of water up to 10 metres high have been reported in
many areas.
South Asia is the worst hit region, with more than three thousand deaths
reported across Sri Lanka and India.
But that figure's expected to rise sharply as communications are
restored to areas isolated by the catastrophe.
The number of those known to have been injured stands at more than five
thousand.

Other reports have the deaths after the Tsunamis at closer to 10,000.
Can you imagine it, all those unprepared villagers that live close to
the shore, the babies, the children, it's just beyond awful.

I'm just horrified and soooo saddened
I have turned the radio off for awhile now :-(
Here I was feeling sad about our 'old grief' and my SIL burying her father
(who wasn't young) today and now this has just shaken me, all the young who
have lost their lives... it's just tragic :-(

It's just heartbreaking...I've been following the story throughout the
day, the BBC website has interviews with survivors and eye witnesses,
and it's just unimaginable :-(
My thoughts are with all those connected with the tragedy.

Wow. I can't even imagine. Water at those magnitudes is utterly terrifying.
I truly feel for those people and the country as a whole. Just rips my heart
to pieces.
I will be keeping them in my prayers.
For those wondering- the death toll is now near 12,000. Truly horrifying.

It's hard to even wrap one's mind around such numbers. How completely tragic.

I've been reading messages on several Dutch sites where family members
here can post information about their loved ones that haven't checked
in. Heartbreaking. One that particularly touched my heart was the
inquiry after a young woman...the picture of her was one of her in her
wedding dress. It is the most recent picture her family has of her.
After her wedding just a few days ago, she and her new husband left for
their honeymoon. Husband is injured, wife is still missing...
