My camellia (large flowering outdoor bush) is wearing all our spare
bedsheets tonight <g> It looks quite a sight!
The problem is that the flower buds are really vulnerable to frosts,
especially when the morning sun then hits them. The bush is my favourite
plant in my garden and I had a big battle to save it from being killed
off by the neighbours new extension over the summer. We've had such a
mild winter, no more than very light frosts and the flower buds are
really advanced. Id hate to lose them now!
So when I glanced at the outdoor thermometer and saw it at -1C and
falling rapidly tonight I had a bit of a panic. Hence a few moments ago
I was up a stepladder in the pitchblack with an armful of sheets and a
torch pegging sheets all over the bush.
I hope it works :)

Oh I have always missed at least one frost and killed off a few plants or at
least took them out for the season. I'm getting better about it. We
learned about summer heat as well... I don't know if covering the plant
would help us there but I suppose keeping direct sun off of it would be
better?!
We will try it this summer if needed.
I hope your sweet camellia makes it through the night!

Definately NOT an utter mad woman. I love camellia's. I haven't been
able to grow them successfully in the past as we get quite a few
frosts here, however our new farm is supposed to be fairly frost free
- there is a lovely frangipani tree that doesn't look to have ever
been touched by frost - so am planning on having a few around. My
inlaws always had camellia's and MIl would cut the flowers with very
short stems and float them in water for a table decoration. Just
beautiful.
