We have a wide variety of creatures and critters that show up around these
parts and sometimes in our house. I think you all have become aware that we
share the desert here with some of the more wild things that exist. Anyhow
two nights ago and then again last night we spotted something that really
concerned me. First off it was huge and pretty ugly but not only that but
it was very fast and looked like a scorpion but wasn't one just by the looks
of it. I did a guessing game but couldn't retrieve anything online to come
close to this creature. Well I found it... Desert Camel Spider. Seems
these come from elsewhere... at least I can't see that they are native to AZ
or even the US. Most sites I was looking at are Arab. Interesting info. on
this...

If that was me I'd be moving! I HATE spiders, especially big FAST ones. I'm
getting the heeby-jeebies just thinking about it.

It is a trade off. I had a friend in a brand new house in Tucson. They had
tons of stuff coming into the house. Scorpions, centipedes, spiders. So I
guess I will deal with what is here but over the years we have worked to
make the house have less spaces for buggies to get in.
I have desensitiezed a bit to some of it but that one gave me a bit of the
creeps since I'd never seen it before and because it is hidious to look at.
We saw one in CA too that looked like he/she had been eating well... fat
thing! Gad!

I hope you've called the local museum or wild life authority and
reported what you saw... non-native species can really stuff up the
local ecosystems, and if some of these little beasties have colonised
your area it is a matter of concern. Desert ecosystems can be very
fragile.
Wonder how it got there... returning Gulf War veterans who like exotic
pets maybe?

I'm not going to sleep well tonight...
What an ugly looking thing. Yet also another amazing creature. I have
this horrible problem...I HATE spiders, but I am fascinated so look at
them on tv (not on top of the tv...I'd run out of the room) and
pictures.

according to the articles they *aren't* spiders... just like harvestmen
(daddy longlegs) aren't spiders. they have 8 legs, but they're a
different family. i don't suppose that makes you feel any better though.
i'm the official household spider evictor here. i don't much like them
*on* me, but i do enjoy watching them. they're fascinating creatures.
lee <had to wait for a jumping spider to get a drink before i could evict
him this morning>
