Daycare woes

I've decided to begin job searching recently, and started checking out
local daycare providers.
Not one single place I've called will accept infants.  Their standard
is 2 years old and at least 75% potty trained.

/sigh/

very frustrating

I can't really help you ... but I hope you are able to find soemthing that
works soon.
I remember how hard it was to find daycare for The Kid when she was a baby.

it's awful hey, here we have a 3 yr wait because siblings get in first,
luckily DS got in that way and DD got her permanent spot after 3 yrs on
the waiting list, it ment though I had to pay and send her before I was
back at work and luckily I could sell DS's days that were ment to start
in feb until next week.
Good luck, &5% potty trained at 2 is a bit of an ask!

Do you have a waitl list because there is a shortage of providers, or
is it because they're so good people are lining up?

>Good luck, &5% potty trained at 2 is a bit of an ask!

No kidding.  So far none of mine have been PT before the age of 3.

I think it's a lack of places and the fact nowdays so many mums need to
go back to work to help support the family. There are some private ones
that charge $60-70 a day that have vacancies but at that price with two
kids I'd be giving them all my pay. Mine is work based so slightly
cheaper I pay $42 each per day. Also kids under two means they can have
less of them so not as profitable I guess.
Good luck finding somewhere, I think it's easier to get a place at the
begiining of school years when the older kids move on to big school.

We don't get an extended family leave, either.  It just makes no sense
that care is so hard to find for infants, when so many parents will
have to go back to work when they're only months old, too.

Nan, (seriously) have you ever thought about the possibility of starting
your own?

Only to the point of figuring out getting licensed would be really
tough, and our house is just too small.
Besides, I'd rather get out of the house and talk to people over 4
feet tall ;-)

What about a nanny?

I haven't researched it, but it would seem to be way too expensive,
thereby practically negating the point of going back to work.

The avg. daycare cost in this area for A is around $93/week, and for E
it is $80/week.

infant daycare (licensed) in my state runs between $200-
250/week. i don't see how people can afford to go back to
work. even the SAHM that babysits charges $150/week & up.
if i had to pay that, hiring a nanny seems more reasonable
because the baby wouldn't be exposed to outside germs & nannys
do some small bits of housework.

In my area, I'm one of the only ones who takes babies under a year old
and, roughly, only a quarter of the service will take a babe under 2.
It's really hard because most parents choose to go back to work before
the child is 2.

Good luck on the job search and the daycare spot search.

Have you called any church day cares?  Most of the ones I've seen/worked for
accepted infants from 6weeks.  If you come down here I'll watch em both.

The ones I've called aren't licensed.  In order to be able to take
advantage of the daycare voucher program, I need to find a licensed
provider.  I could find 'babysitters' until the cows come home, but
having to pay a ton for daycare sort of defeats the purpose of going
to work.

That's surprising.  Here you can't legally call yourself a day care if you
aren't licensed.  And I so know what you mean about the cost.  You would
just be working to pay for the daycare.  Have you thought of babysitting,
yourself?  I actually made a nice chunk of change sitting.  My rates were
$20 a day for 2 days or less and $50 a week for 3 or more.  This was for
each child.  I didn't give discounts for siblings since my rates were so low
to begin with and included lunch and snack.  I was earning in the
neighborhood of $200 to $300 a week.  Just a thought.  Good luck.

I guess IN doesn't have that rule.  The "Stay and Play" program E goes
to at her preschool calls itself a daycare and they're not licensed,
but are working on the licensing requirements.

I wouldn't be a good candidate for babysitting ;-)

Oh I know about that... I had a daycare when we had just 1 kiddo and the
woman was adament about only totally potty trained.  It was so
disappointing!

Keep looking because someone somewhere who loves babes will do it!  I know!
Hopefully someone with reasonable expectations for charging a family too!

If you don't want to take care of it why didn't you put it up for
adoption?

How odd...obviously I'm not an expert in daycare myself, but I do know
that daycares here will take babies aged 6 weeks and over. Of course we
do have waiting lists here as well, but they won't refuse children
because of their ages.
