I have to be honest - I cannot stand the taste of water. I hate our water
because it tastes chlorinated (they swear it's not) and I can't afford
bottle water so ...

Can anyone think of any alternatives?

If you want to drink water, get a pitcher and fill with water.  Let sit - in
sunshine - like on a table in front of a window - doesn't have to be
outside - and the chlorine will evaporate.  Takes just a few hours.
Sunlight zaps chlorine.

That's if chlorine is the problem and not some other sediments that are
flowing through the pipes.

So says the wise woman from the south with a father that happens to be a
Ph.D. in the chemical engineering department at the university.  :)

Probably our pipes ...
I actually dislike all water - bottled, filtered, tap - but I REALLY hate
our water.

You've gotten some great ideas... I'll add, if you can afford about
$20 for one, a filtration pitcher is a good idea.  I used to use one
here, but we have so much junk (including lead and arsenic) in our tap
water that a filter pitcher was worthless.
I now buy bottled water for drinking and cooking.
I pay 39-cents a gallon for refills, so it's not that expensive.
I've heard about bottled water not being all it's cracked up to be,
but my concern is that we not get the garbage in our community water,
not that the bottled water be ultra wonderful :-)

Arsenic? Ew?

As for the filter - we've tried filters, they don't work.

Spare a 1 gallon jug of milk.   But wash it really, really, really
well!   Or if you can spare 99cents, but a gallon of cheap water once,
and when its done, save the jug.

Fill this jug with tap water and refridgerate for 24 hrs.   You'll
notice a difference it taste.

Lemon juice, lime juice - both can help flavor water a bit.

[with water]?  Well, I buy my bottled water at $0.58cents per gallon, it's
store-brand.  I do brew my tea gently with tap water, and that usually does
good for me.  Just buy the caffeine free type teas =)
