Question for you.

If you were at a swim meet.  The timers are timing their lanes.  People are
standing around wanting to check times to see if the child beat their
previous times and see who won.  The folks by the lanes see two kids come in
almost (almost meaning they couldn't swear they absolutely touched at the
same time but it is very very very close if not simultaneous).  The timers
however, show a 2 second difference between those two kids times.  Would you
say that the people standing around saying it was simultaneous were right or
the timers?

I will tell you more when I get your answer.

Timers. It is their JOB to take and record times to the BEST OF THEIR
ABILITY. When you swim in year-round competitive leagues, there is a pad at
the end of the lane that gets the times by touch. If this fails (which it
often does- people touch wrong, it malfunctions, etc) they go immediately to
the watch times and average the two for the final times. This is the
person's time. NO ifs, ands or buts about about! If you would give the
parents/spectators that privelege, there would be absolutely NO order to the
swim meets what so ever. Coaches would then be able to time their own
swimmers and argue the times and on and on. In our league, however, there
are place judges that record STRICTLY which order the kids touched in. That
way, if there are any descrepencies with the times, they can refer to the
place judge and vice versa.

I'm interested to hear the whole story!

I'm sure you would probably appreciate this story...
Last year it started to storm during one of our meets. We watched the radar
and continued to wait the declared time after each bolt of lighting/round of
thunder. After waiting for nearly an hour, our coaches (one being my
brother) went to the other coaches in attempts to get them to cancel. They
wouldn't because they were CERTAIN it would clear up. We called all *4*
weather stations and talked to *2* chief meteorologists (one of whom
mentioned our call during his broadcast) and they all said to cancel because
it wouldn't be ending any time soon. The other coaches started sending over
swimmers to sneak a peak at the score to decide whether or not they would
cancel (aka- if they were winning, they'd cancel and if they were losing,
they would NOT cancel). My mom is/was the scorer and wouldn't allow them to
see the score and the back-up scorer (a mom from the other team) wouldn't
even let them see the score! It turned into a FIESTY little exchange. We
ended up calling our parents rep who is ALSO in charge of the whole league
but she was out of town. She said the coaches needed to have each team's
parent rep meet to discuss it and she named a parent rep in her place. They
didn't even have to talk more than 2 minutes to know it needed to be
cancelled. The other coaches were SOOOO rude. The tone of voice they used
with our coaches and their condescending attitudes were ridiculous. In the
end, they ended up winning which made them look even more ridiculous.
HOWEVER, sweet revenge was on our side this year and we beat them by a LOT 2
weeks ago! Yayy!

Well I thought you'd say Timers.  But I had to see it for myself.

The opposing team decided since the 2 seconds went in our favor that they'd
call us cheaters and leave.  harumph!

The coach actually wanted to just leave it all be.  The judge for their team
decided we were cheating.  She being very young and immature (those
attributes don't always go together but it describes her)  was not willing
to let it go. Within minutes she said she'd forfiet to us cheaters and leave
with her team.  I know the coach was embarrassed but she let the parents and
this girl have their way.

It was horrifying to me... how can parents and this girl be so ridiculous.
The problem here was they were losing and she knew that.  My guess is if she
had been winning she would have let it go and not even paid much attention
to two stinking seconds on a watch.  AS well I think this girl was upset
because our team had a disqualifying judge this gal didn't care for the
calls.  The DQ judge stated on the loud speaker:  "I'm the only person
stepping forward to do this job as DQ judge.  If you want it come and get
it... I don't have to do this if anyone else from the other teams wants to
do this!"  No one stepped forward.

I hope this doesn't have deeper reprecussions.

I think I remembered you telling this story... it had deeper meaning for me
now.  Ridiculous!

Glad you beat them.

We will be in the end championship soon and I don't wish any ill on this
team but I don't wish them much luck either in the end!

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Ohhhhh my goshhhhhhh! That is RIDICULOUS!

Wow!!! I would be TOTALLY ashamed to be on this team! What type of lesson is
this teaching these kids? First of all they accuse people of cheating when
things aren't in their favor. What a SORRY excuse! Second of all they just
give up and leave? That's just horrible!

I'm sorry but if I were one of the parents from that team, I'd seriously
consider calling it quits until this girl got her act together or she was
replaced!

Ooooh that is SO obnoxious!! If no one else is going to get off their rear
end and do it then they have ABSOLUTELY no right to complain about how well
she is doing the job. Sort of like people who don't vote have NO right to
complain about the winning candidate AT ALL.

I can guarantee you that she would have brushed it off if they were winning!
I highly doubt it was so close that winning this event would have put them
in the lead! Give me a break!

> I hope this doesn't have deeper reprecussions.

I do too. If anything, though, it would have negative repercussions on the
OTHER team...not yours! They have absolutely NO factual argument against you
guys!

Same here! It wasn't even CLOSE this year. Unfortunately our strongest
events are and always have been back, fly and I.M. which are at the end of
the meet for us so we probably WOULD have won last year (they were winning
by 3 after breastroke) if we finished the whole meet. Oh well!

Oooooh I hope you guys do REALLY well to spite them!!

There might actually be some good kids/parents on that team...unfortunately
it just takes one or two people to poison the whole group! Ick!

> GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Good luck, Anni!! Hope things are MUCH smoother from here on out!

I agree... I wanted to know more about how the parents felt.  We skipped
practice today to go meet up with a friend of mine.

We will see.

The DQ judge stated on the loud speaker:  "I'm the only person

I would think she should speak her mind but realize in the end it is just
how it is with the timer and she needs to be glad it is that way.  If the
tables were turned she'd be glad that is a rule.

Oh I know that is true... they were not far behind but I think something
snapped for her somehow.  She likely knew that her team didn't have what it
took to catch up and this just sent her over the edge.  We have timers on
all lanes and some of their timers were on our kids and vice versa... it is
just how it is... no one cheats.

No I don't think so... if it had been more than 2 seconds (and I know
seconds count) I would have been wondering why they wouldn't just do it over
(if they even can).  But 2 seconds????

We were in the finals last year and we came in 2nd after we had to stop
because of weather also... it was said the same thing happened to us.  We
would have come in 1st because our strongest events are at the end.
Anyhow... I realized it was okay... my dd loves the swimming.  If we ever
got to this point where it became more important to win than it is for the
kids to enjoy themselves, learn and build skill I know many of our parents
would pull their kids.
