I think we left FLorida at the right time! My heavens! Our 90+ weather in
Vermont has been quite enough! At least we get breaks in the heat here with
cold fronts floating through and temps dipping into the 60's some nights.

How do yo ulike Vermont? i am really considering relocting there , no idea
where - LOL just VT - maybe Burlington area? Obviously haven't researched it
much! DH is going in a few weeks. I'm scared it is too cold most of the
year.

I like Vermont. That said, be advised that housing costs and property taxes
in Vermont are significant, with the county containing Burlington is
considered the most expensive housing market in Vermont. It also is
probably the area with the most jobs since it is the only 'city', so to
speak, in Vermont. The seasons are lovely, but be prepared for weather down
to 30 below and up to high 90's. [but those 90's disappear faster than in
Florida!] If you look over the line into upstate NY your housing costs go
way down, and you can commute into Vermont.......Schools up here seem to be
mainly ok, certainly better than FL., but the issues I've been seeing crop
up are all over the country and Vermont is not excluded. The current
concern related to drugs is the probable arrival of meth labs from the
mid-west, and law enforcement and parents are mobilizing by educating the
public and so forth. And, be prepared to drive a ways for stuff. If you
don't live in the Burlington area you may well not have any significant
nation wide chain stores, nearby. Rutland is one exception with a mall,
Mkart and Walmart as well as a homedepot.

If you decide to move to Vermont, let me know!

southern & western VT housing prices are high due to the
exodus of folks from NYC & NJ. oddly, many of the properties
seem to be only used seasonally though. why buy a farm house
on 20+ acres for a "summer house"?
prices along the border in NY are going up rapidly. i've seen
similar properties in Granville sell for up to 3x what they
would have 3 years ago, plus there is way more subdividing
going on.
there are border areas along the NH/VT border that are still
'reasonable', but again, you'll want to be moving fast to get
the deals. depending on the type of work you're looking for,
Keene may have something. it's a fairly large city (for NH) &
a college town. NH doesn't have income or sales tax, & despite
people ranting about property tax here, i can't see that it's
any worse than property tax in, say, upstate NY.
VT income tax is a percentage of your federal tax, if that
helps.

The seasons are lovely, but be
> prepared for weather down to 30 below and up to high 90's.

um, the -30 winter weather can be (& frequently is)
accompanied by windchills that make it feel -50 :)
fortunately, that only lasts a couple days/year.
it's been much warmer & more humid this year than usual, so i
wouldn't judge summers in general by this one. last summer was
so cool & rainy i didn't get *any* tomatoes. just too cool for
fruit set.

We are just as bad down here in NC. It's 105, 110 if you count the heat
index. YUCK. My AC hasn't shut off all day. My electric bill will be high
this month I'm sure.

speaking of which... my electric bill runs over $200/month
(that's about $98 for the electricty & the rest is carrier
charges & taxes). what's average in other areas of the
country?

Our July bill is $132 for both gas and electric....
$22 gas, $110 electric.
We've had 2 window a/c units running almost constantly since about
May.

ok, my gas is seperate. it runs about $100/month now since all
the latest price increases. gas is the water heater, dryer &
range. it's usually lower in the summer because i line dry the
laundry, but it's been either 75+% humidity or actually raining
since May...
my heating is oil & that was pushing $4000 last winter. oil
prices are expected to be higher this winter. i don't have
firewood cut this winter (what i have isn't seasoned enough to
burn yet), so i'm buying 3 cords @ $200/cord. that should keep
my heat about the same as last year, maybe less if the super
duper replacement windows really work)
if i average my electric bill over the year it comes to
$225/month. what gets me is less than half is actually charge
for use. most of it is delivery fees, line charges, fees, taxes
& who knows what :p
the electric company is looking for rate hikes within the next
week, which they say will raise rates about $5/month. oh joy!
(actually they are saying they need to upgrade infrastructure in
CT & Boston so we'll be expected to pay for that (why isn't CT &
Boston paying for it? not *my* fault/problem if they have brown
outs) & we can expect a $20/month increase if that gets approved
:p )

Our heating is gas so our winter bills jump quite a bit. Last winter
they were pretty high, at $450/month, but that is for both gas and
electric.

gas is getting close to the price of fuel oil here. oil was a
better bargain when i bought the new furnace 5 years ago (and
that almost halved the previous years heat bill!)
i'm getting all new windows installed next week... 35 of
them! ouch! they are triple pane, gas filled, low e,
reflective, tilt windows (remember my post last fall about not
being able to clean the windows... well, one way to get clean
windows...<g>). they are replacing windows that range from 190
years old to 30 years old, all single pane... the company
guarantees a 40% reduction in heating cost. they'd say cooling
cost too, if i had central air conditioning, but even so, they
should cut down considerably on heat transfer from sun shining
in. i hope anyway.

Well my electric was 132 last month. That is for everything the stove,
fridge, washer, dryer, etc. I'm sure it's going to be ALOT more this month.

from my unairconditioned home in Vermont: first two full months of
electricity were both $113 and change. That is almost *exactly* what I was
paying per month in Florida for an airconditioned house when I had the bills
averaged out over the year [heat/stove/hot water were not electric]. I was
shocked at the cost of power in Vermont, particularly so close to all that
reportedly 'cheap' Canadian power!

We are an "all electric" home and have the pool and pond pumps that run
thruout the day too. In an AC's home I believe our average electric bill
is about $150/month. My sister, who lives in a much smaller home, doesn't
have the pool or water features that require the pumps, and has gas for
heat, stove and hotwater - her average bill is about $85/month.

I'm currently amazed at the food prices. I just spent $100 last night for
food for this weekend. - and that didn't include meat or condiments.
Family of 3.

I recall not to long agon, $100 would last me for a few weeks - not 3 days.

It's in the mid-80's today, hotter tomorrow, but a 'cold' front is expected
to come through overnight Wed. with temps bottoming in the 60's for nights.
Does that help?

you ought to have some good weather. if you know the zip code you are going
to be staying at [look it up at http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp

go to:
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/us-city-list.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=0

and you will be able to get a pretty good forecast for that time period. I
use it especially for winter weather driving as it predicts arrival/end of
weather *times* reasonably accurately [within an hour of actual ime].
