on this hurricane.  Basically we are hearing a few different and varied
things about what has happened.  Fox news has it as hitting as a Cat. 4 and
NPR said 3... not that that will make overall a ton of difference but it is
different.  I'm just not sure where to look for the right information?

I would take NPR over Fox any day.
I think some of the news stations hyped it up so much that they *want* it to
be a cat 5 or worse ... even if it's not

At this point, the pictures and videos speak for themselves. See my post
under JJ's thread below.

I don't really think the Cat. level is relevant any longer. Any further
evaluations are based on the level of destruction, number of lives lost,
estimated damage quota, insurance estimates, etc. In other words, it is
possible that a Cat 2 hurricane can become one for the record books if it
happened to create mass destruction or take a large number of lives.

I think the reports of it being a Cat 4 at landfall are most accurate. It
did lessen into a Cat 3 not much after that, though, and I think that is
where the discrepancies lie. I was shocked by the fact that it was still a
Cat 1 hurricane as of 8pm tonight or somewhere around there!

all the different news accounts can be frustrating ... and your right, the
level doesn't matter at this point ... i just hope that the ppl that have
been affected can recover.  I'm not so sure that I would be able to :(

I was thinking the same thing. It would be so easy to give up hope at that
point- even for the most optimistic. It's a tragedy and a feeling I hope I
never have to understand. :(

For now I will be keeping them all in my thoughts and prayers. When relief
funds are established and such, I will hopefully contribute.

So very sad. :(

It is awful and you are right the cat level is not important I just got
confused by the different accounts and to try and understand what is going
on I wanted some clarity if possible.

I am praying for everyone involved.... I know that tragedy draws out the
best in some people.  I also know that with tragedy lives are changed
forever in a way I can't even begin to understand.

which is exactly why i choose to live in an area where there
are minimal risks of natural disasters...
while New England does have chances for hurricanes,
tornadoes, earthquakes, forest fires & Nor'Easter blizzards,
they are few & far between.
*all* of life is a risk. you just have to choose which ones
are more acceptable to you & which you really don't want to
deal with. then you learn the best ways to minimize chances of
damage from the risks you chose to live with.
for people to choose to live in an area of swamp 10 or more
feet BELOW sealevel, in a hurricane prone area...well, they
have to be ready to accept quite a bit of risk of loss, either
of life or property. the attitude of "it can't happen to me"
isn't going to help in a situation like Katrina.

um, it CAN'T be worse than a Cat 5...
it was a Cat 5 on Sunday night. if you looked at the
satellite pictures from then it was really scary. the eye was
bigger than the little peninsula that sticks out at the end of
Louisiana!
it had lost some steam (down to a Cat 4) before making
landfall & it missed NO by 15 miles or so, so it wasn't the
worst case scenario, but it was /is pretty nasty.

My understanding from the National Hurricane Center was that it
made its first landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 (well, its first
landfall
on Monday, that is) and was a Category 3 by the time it made its
second landfall near the Louisiana/Mississippi border.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Yes, Ericka. This is what I gathered from what I heard, too.

it hit the coast as a Cat 4, but once it made landfall it
degraded fairly quickly (which is what usually happens).
at the moment (well, at 5am) it was down to tropical storm
status. it's still likely to cause a great deal of flooding to
the Ohio & Tennessee Valleys
