One thing I didn't like about Opera is the way it opens a lot of windows,
don't know if that's the right way to describe it, but the tabs along the
top are distracting. I also didn't like the ads on the free version.
In Thunderbird, I couldn't figure out how to use killfiles, if there are
any.
Why not just download them and try them out? You can always uninstall them
if you don't like them.

So turn off tabbed browsing.

Ok, I see what you mean. But I believe I myself could live with that.
I was not satisfied with the way Opera imported my thunderbird account,
and will probably do the importing again and tell him to not import the
messages.

Well, you could get the adfree version for free at least until today
morning, that was why I d'led opera and installed it. Opera got 10 years
old yesterday, which caused the company to present us that nice gift ;-)

There are, and they function as Ericka told.

I will, in fact I have. I just wanted to know the opinion of this group
here about opera.
