Ok.  I am wondering when your children went to school for the first times,
how often did they get sick?  Ds has been in school 3 weeks and is sick once
again.  Not to mention me as well... although mine is a hernia again.  I
hope this time they put mesh in.  I really don't want to have another
surgery... I am FED UP with it.  This will be the third hernia removed, had
four operations on my foot and my gall bladder removed.... I am sick of
sick!!!!  <sigh> Will it ever end?

It's not uncommon at all for a child to get sick frequently when they
go to school or even daycare.
E has been sick a lot since starting Kindergarten.

I hope you get your hernia resolved.  I had my surgery last year, and
they had to put in a 16 cm. piece of mesh in, mine was so large.

The good thing with this is, they don't keep track of attendance just yet.

Has it returned?  This is my 3rd.  i'm thinking they need to put mesh in
myself.  The first one I got when I was preggers, the second I fell at my
moms and this one, I have no idea.  I'm just tired of being cut open...  can
they put mesh around the whole belly button area?  they've all been around
the belly button but in different areas.

I haven't had any problems since my hernia repair surgery.  When I had
my gallbladder surgery they swept away some adhesions, but other than
that, no problems.  A surgeon should be able to put mesh where you're
wanting it.  Mine is 16 cm in diameter, so it's across the entire
front of my abdomen.  It took 14 lap incisions to get it all tacked
down.

the first year of preschool? i don't think he ever *didn't*
have a cold. he had one within 3 days of starting until June.
you are going to have to be militant about hand washing, his
*and* yours. ask the school to make sure he washes his hands
before eating (but that only helps a tiny bit, as anytime they
touch anything a sick kid touched & then touch thier face,
they've infected themselves) & make sure they're cleaning the
toys at least daily.
if you don't have a dishwasher, use boiling water to rinse,
especially the silverware & glasses.
make up some 10% bleach solution & use it to disinfect
counters, doorknobs, keyboards, washable toys, anything the
kid touches... (ok, you can buy disinfectant wipes, but the
bleach solution is cheaper & kills more germies)
buy stock in Tylanol & Motrin.
good luck. it gets better after the first year.

Both mine were sick aprox 1 week out of every month for the whole first
year in childcare, after that things improved greatly.(mine both went
into childcare 2 days a week at age1)

Yeah - it's usual for them to come down with a few things to start off
with - but once their system adjusts he should be fine  - Hope you
manage to get yourself sorted ..

If she is under a doctor's care, the absences should be excused.  Get
your doc to write them a note.

If she has been out alot, you may want to ask the school to provide
home-hospital teachers.  Most school districts have teachers who will
come to your home to keep her up on the curriculum.

see that's just it, I have taken doc notes everytime she has been out, and
she is at a 3rd grade reading level...alot of you have seen that I complain
to the teacher b/c she does get bored in school but there isn't alot they
can do, it's a public school and she has to follow the circulem *SP*  that
the state mandates for her age..:-(
So I am kind of stuck in between a rock and a hard place...

I would think that as long as you document all her illnesses, then
that is your ammunition IF they try the court thing.  IME, schools
make that threat and rarely follow through unless it's an extreme
case.  E has been sick quite a bit, too.  The social worker called
about it and I simply thanked her for her concern, but assured her
that she definitely *was* sick when she'd miss.
I actually called the principal and she agreed that E's absences were
excused, and there was no problem.
Since Kindergarten isn't compulsory, I am not going to get overly
concerned about attendance, but I do make sure she goes unless she's
ill.
