Due to water damage we are going to have to have the floor in our bathroom
completely replaced.  The floor is going to have to be ripped out to the
beams, rebuilt and retiled.  This kind of sucks as I just re did the
bathroom, paint, floor tile about a year ago.
This time around we are doing a major remodel, ripping out the sink, toilet,
tub and shower.
This small bathroom is used by all 4 of us.  Even though it's a small
bathroom it has a very large closet, so that is helpful.  We only have one
tub/shower in the house, the other bathroom is a 1/2 bath and for some
insane reason it's in the laundry room, so it pretty much NEVER gets used.
I need good space saving ideas.  I would like each person to have their own
space for toiletries.  Right now the girls are too young to have many of
their own personal toiletries, but soon enough they will need space for
their own shampoos, personal care items, makeup, and all the stuff girls
*need*.  I would rather have permanent type fixtures for each person as I
have found having baskets of stuff for each person is confusing and
cluttering.
I would also like to have some sort of built in laundry hamper.
So .. if you were going to redo your bathroom what would you have that you
think would really help?

lets see, if I were going to redo my bathroom, hmmmm.....

Id put in a flat screen telly (of course this one would be magically
waterproof), just above the taps and a really good sound system. The
room would be soundproofed so I couldnt hear any complaints that I was
taking too long in the bath.

Next to the bath would be a wine bottler chiller thingy, so that I could
drink cold champagne. The side of the bath would be wide and non slip of
course so my glass wouldnt slide off into the bath.

The bath would have an automatic temp thingy so it never went cold.

I'd have a really good book rest with an automatic page turning thingy
so that my pages didnt get soggy.

was that helpful??? <G>

Sorry you are having to remodel again. What a pain for you. I hope
others are more helpful than me :)

hehe w/ those ideas  maybe I should set up a donate to Kat's bathroom
project.  Free use of the bathroom w/ $500 donation, all others go to the
gas station down the street ;)
(for anyone that thinks I'm asking for money, I"M KIDDING)

We had our master bath redone last year. It used to have tons of
undercounter space because there were about 8 running feet of counter
with two sinks (the cupboards had one shelf) and we went to
freestanding sinks, so I thought we'd lose a lot of storage space. Our
contractor built two freestanding pieces that look like dressers. They
have granite tops to protect them from water damage. (sounds expensive,
but two small pieces of square granite were far less expensive than
countertops would be if we had kept the old layout) The top third of
one  piece has two shelves with doors but the doors have mesh fronts.
The bottom 2/3 of that piece has 4 wide shallow drawers. The other
piece has the drawers on top and the mesh on the bottom. The idea was
on the mesh on the bottom piece that it could house a laundry hamper if
we took the shelves out. The pieces are each about 8 inches taller than
normal counter height, about as deep as counters, and about 30 inches
wide. Even though the cubic footage of storage space is probably about
1/2 of what I had under the counters, the space is easier to access and
use.

I find that the shallow drawers work SO well. It's easy to find stuff
and because we have a total of 8 drawers, it's easy to assign drawers
to specific uses. At the same time, they are shallow enough that things
don't get piled on top of each other. I could have had the contractor
put dividers in, but I thought that would be hard to clean. Instead, I
put in liner paper and then each drawer has about 20 of those little
organizers you get at the dollar store. (like the Rubbermaid drawer
organaizers that clip together but cheaper) The organizers can go in
the dishwasher when I need to clean the drawers out. Taller items such
as shampoo sit nicely on the shelves and I have extra facecloths and
towels on the top shelf.

Consider space for frequently worn shoes.  Seems I am always ditching
shoes in the bathroom and by the end of the dya, there are three or
four pair to lug back to the closet.

Hamper(s) are always good to have handy.  And be sure to provide lots
of towel drying rods etc.

IKEA makes great ones that go on vertically and then have sturdy arms
that come out. We had them in our old house and they worked great. I
also have one in my laundry room for hanging lingerie on to dry.

I would see about California closets since this is a major redo, also might
consider getting rid of the closet and going with built in shelving, not as
deep but maybe more efficient if you could access it better, Lee

they sell metal hampers that fit in the wall between the studs. or you can
build one yourself.

we created a bathroom.  Used a free standing toilet paper roll holder
which I love.  The wall ones seem to get pulled off or are never right
for me.  :  )

We didn't put shelves on the alls we used the metal ones (look like the
baker shelves only for bathrooms) and hung a dealie on the back of the
door which holds towels and has a hamper (a towel rack and hamper in
one)  We did actually have one narrow shelf on the wall that holds
stuff... floor to ceiling narrow cupboard.   We also used a corner
shower (no tub in there).  All of this saves room and I like the fact
the shelves can be moved.  I also used a standing mirror... one of those
tall mirrors that stand on the floor that are in a base that you can
move around.
