I've been having a *lot* of computer problems this last week, first my
virusscan bit my firewall and then the firewall bit back, which led to a
big mess. Long story, never mind, I seem to have fixed it (knock on
wood).

I have also been having XP problems. System repair won't respond
sometimes or it will tell me it is impossible to make a (what's that
called in the English version?) repair point at that time. When I later
had a look, it *did* make system repair points. In fact, I had made lord
knows how many in a time space of a few minutes, simply by retrying
because XP kept on telling me no system repair point was made. A similar
problem occured with the Defragmentisation function. Everything was
fully functioning, I could click on whatever button I wanted, nothing
started to happen.

Next to all this, I have been experiencing problems switching the
computer off. I'll go through the whole procedure, but nothing will
happen. Even pushing the switch off button on the computer itself
doesn't work at all. Reboot button works, as does switching off the
power, and the computer doesn't crash either, everything will continue
to work, it's just that the switch off process won't always start.

And now tonight: aaaah, charming, a new problem <sarcasm>. Suddenly half
of my folders in OE had disappeared, including everything in them. It
wasn't just mail folders either, one NG had disappeared as well. Oddly
enough when I tried to subscribe to the NG again, it was missing from
the list of NGs on that server. It took resetting the account properties
for it to re-occur. I solved the problem with the disappeared mail
folders by taking a backupped version of folders.dbx and overwriting the
current version. That did mean however, that all the NGs reset to the
date the backup was made. No, I'm not saying that correctly. They didn't
reset. I had manually deleted most of those old posts from the NGs,
leaving only recent ones. Now all of a sudden all the months old
messages reappeared and were added to the messages already in the NGs.
Suddenly I have nearly 6,000 posts in AM (I have no idea how I can have
messages dating back to May now, when the German news server won't even
carry messages that old). Needless to say I have just made a new backup
of OE, having corrected everything that needed correcting. I really
don't want to have to use another ancient backup should the problem
re-occur.

It's so many things all at once. Oh forgot to say: been getting a few
messages saying OE wasn't the standard software used for email and would
I like to change that, same thing for IE as my browser. Both have
*always* been my standard software.

I swear something on this 'puter has started to lead a life of its own,
but *what*? Virusscan, firewall, spyware, nothing found on my scans. I
have no ideas what's going on. Thoughts anyone?

I just couldn't leave latrine to be the only thing to reply to you,
after such a long absence it's just too good to see you again! I hope
you get to fix things. At least you did one good deed: remind me that I
desperately need to backup my system!

Hugs from Alphen

Good to see you too :-D! And as for the toilet, the trash can is where
that one is going ;-).

> I hope you get to fix things.

So do I, the problems seem to spread to other appliances. Yesterday a
single that I had bought off Marktplaats arrived and I wanted to play it
on my record player (yes RECORD, the thing is not available on CD LOL).
The single turned around just fine, but no sounds coming out of the
boxes. Checked all the wires, but everything seemed fine there. Still, I
thought that perhaps the problem lay in the record player connecting to
the boxes. If it was, the tape desk should record the single, right? So
I decided to tape the music. Of course who uses tapes these days?? There
was one in the tape player, so I checked whether I could tape on that
tape. Tape jammed stuck almost instantly, so I spent 15 mins getting the
pieces of tape out of the tape recorder. Groovy :-(!

Finally found another tape, but that recorded no sound from the record
player either. So...problem must be signal outgoing from the record
player, not *incoming* in boxes of tape recorder. I'll have to see
whether I can operate on the record player...

Anyway, no more probs with OE since last Sunday, just the problem
shutting down the computer recurring. Some times it won't do system
repair either. Yesterday system repair reported a problem with a thing
called 'callgrid' plus a runtime error. Can't find anything related to
that 'callgrid' thingy, so we'll see what happens next. Perhaps the
machine was just overcome by the heat ;-).

I'm usually quite up to date with that, but I've been busy with exams
since June and that combined with the heatwave has prevented me from
spending much time behind my 'puter. When I'm working on the computer on
a daily basis (especially when I've been working on my OU stuff) I
backup the files I have been working on each day on one of my USB
sticks. Of course now that I have broadband I sometimes get lazy and
just email the files to one of my GMail accounts LOL.

As soon as the exams are over (and as long as we don't have another
blasted heatwave at the time) I'll finally get round to all the email
:-). My - now former - ISP had email problems from November until now,
so when hundreds of incoming emails go missing it's virtually impossible
to maintain in touch with people.

Oh BTW, you missed that...none of those exams is math anymore <still
doing the wave>. I left that well and truly behind me. You'll never
guess just what totally ridiculous grade I ended up with for the course
ROTFL.

Now you made me very curious.... At least it's wonderful news that you
manage to pass it, after having so many problems with it :-)

I'll drop a guess.... 7?? Oh no, you said ridiculous, so it must be
higher than that.... ehhhhhm.... 9?

Tell me tell me! You can do that by mail if you want (still have my
addy?)

<blushes> even one step higher m'dear :-D. Of course the fact that the
exam was a complete repeat of the exam I had expected to repeat just
*some* questions from helped a lot. I knew those answers and could fill
out most without ever touching my calculator. 5 Minutes into the exam I
already knew my score was at least an 8. I could have walked out right
then and there ;-). I had not studied the assignments I could do for
myself, so I spent nearly 45 mins doing those and then left. I had
earned 10 extra credit points a long time ago, to be added to the score,
and I calculated 93/100 on the exam. I never even touched the final
case, worth 7 points. I just had not managed to get that blasted thing
memorized and I mean really, what was I to do? Waste time and aim for an
11 LOL?

When that 10 finally came through I was rather relieved, I could just
picture myself being investigated for fraud, as the result was such a
dramatic improvement on all previous results ;-). I ended up with 87/100
on the exam, having made some reproducing errors in the memorized
answers, but none in those assignments I did on the spot. So with the
extra credits 97/110 aka 10, not bad for a severely mathematically
challenged person, er? Had they awarded me a 9 instead of my 10 I would
have appealed, as I was definitely cheated out on several scores. I had
one answer marked down from 4 points to 0! *Hello!* They certainly were
doing their best not to give me my 10 ;-). But you can only appeal when
your grade can improve if the appeal is granted, so no appeal for me
:-).

So here I am, with only one 10 on my grade list and it's for math...;-).
Ri-di-cu-lous. Apart from just passing my exams, my next aim is for a 10
to keep that stupid math course company, and make it seem less absurd
:-).

> Tell me tell me! You can do that by mail if you want (still have my

Yes, I do :-). Somewhere in my OE mess LOL. I'll email you as soon as
I'm done with the exams (please, please, the 17th, *not* another round a
week after) and providing my 'puter works at the time ;-).

Looks like I will have to edit the Windows Registry to get things
fixed...<scary>1
