It can be too early to detect one.
> Is it dangerous?
Depends on how it's checked and what you mean
by "dangerous." If a fetoscope is used, there's no
problem whatsoever (but it may be 20 weeks or more
before you can detect a heartbeat with a fetoscope).
If a doppler is used, I wouldn't call it dangerous,
but it does use ultrasound radiation to detect the
heartbeat. This is very loud to the fetus (babies
do avoid it). I'm unaware of any studies showing
that there are negative effects to the use of dopplers
to detect the heart rate, but there are some studies
that show some possible effects of ultrasound.
So, I guess what I'd say is that there is
some potential for some minor issues, and it probably
does annoy the baby. Some people therefore choose
not to use it, unless there's a medical reason to
do so. There's also a question of how much exposure.
Are we talking about once a month at a prenatal
appointment? Or are we talking about buying or
renting one to use every day at home? I'd be more
concerned about the latter than the former.

From a personal experience. You wouldnt pick up anything with a doppler
before about 12 - 14 weeks, the uterus just isnt high enough. You can
see the baby on an ultrasound and detect a heart beat from 6 weeks, but
I'm guessing you dont have one at home. Dopplers do seem to annoy the
baby because my midwife was always tutting about the baby 'swimming'
away from the probe. Later, they do seem to kick more when the midwife
checks the heart rate. From somewhere around 32 weeks, your partner
ought to be able to hear it through the uterine wall, especially if you
arch your back and 'push' the uterus forward towards your belly button.
Why do you want to check anyway?

You can have the heart beat picked up at 10 weeks-I have twice. And, no, the
dating wasn't wrong.

Congrats. I saw a consultant at 12+ weeks and he couldnt get a damned
thing. In fact he was starting to scare me a little bit. A quick
ultrasound by a midwife confirmed all was well though. Possibly depends
on the size of the baby and your build I guess.
