With all 3 pregnancies, I found that I couldn't bear anything round my waist
from about week 5.

I don't think it's at all abnormal or anything.
I know with this pregnancy (baby/pregnancy #5 for me) I feel like a fat blob
and have felt like that for quite a many weeks. I think I was around the
5-6 week mark that I opted to go for the bigger stuff/pulled out some early
maternity wear and felt a little strange about it... Like 5-6 weeks? I had
just found out a week or two earlier ;)
Just go with whatever is comfortable! If that means pulling out and using
the bigger stuff, then do what you need to do to feel most comfortable!
Carlye,
I've always heard that when you are pregnant, your digestive system slows
down so that you can absorb every last nutrient in the food you eat, which
causes your system to back up. So basically, the bloating you are feeling
is because you are full of sh.t. : )
Before you get rid of all your skirts and pants, can you try the rubber band
trick? Slide a rubber band around the button, and then through the button
hole and back over the button. This may give you an extra inch. Also, if
you link two rubber bands together, and do the same thing, you can get 2-3
inches. If you wear shirts that are not tucked in, or keep a jacket on, it
may work out fine and not be visible.
It does make it tough if you don't want to announce before the end of the
first trimester. Good luck!

Ah-ha! My husband and mother will be so delighted to know they were
always right about me!

I'll have to try that. I tried it with the first pg and it wasn't
comfy enough, but maybe this time it'll work. At worst, it's still
got to feel better than the rigid waistband.
Thanks everyone! I was about ready to either hide from embarassment
or, in the event it was purely psychological, see someone about
getting my head shrunk! :o)

I've generally been out of my regular clothes by 6 weeks. In some
pregnancies I've been able to use the rubber band trick, but in others
it has made me way too sick. In my last pregnancy, I made it through
the first trimester without making an announcement by getting some loose
lower rise pants and using the rubber band trick. I used dollar store
hair rubbers, 1st 1, then 2.

LOL I like that. It's blunt and to the point! ;)

WOW. I have never heard of that one, nor have I thought of such a thing. I
remember I had a pair of pants, years and years ago (before babies) that had
a wonky button on it, but I absolutely loved the pants... I had actually put
a simple coated hair elastic around the button to keep it from popping off
and leaving me stranded with my pants falling off because the button didn't
work properly!
I find my arse gets too big, too fast and I find I feel like I get quite
wide from the waist down. Most of my regular pants are kind of fitting -
not really loose (N hates baggy pants as he likes to see butt a little lol)
so my pants were out long ago - and I don't know if the elastic idea would
have worked (I doubt it would now anyways if I tried) but that is such a
great idea!
I'll keep it in mind, although there will NOT be a next time for me to try
it out LOL

Oh, I was that way while pg with Alexander! Back then I had a small
waist, and I switched over to wearing my husband's jeans (they were
super loose, and I used a belt to just barely keep them on my hips)
and discovered the joys of elastic waistbands with drawstrings. I
guess this time, it would be just the elastic with drawstrings since I
only have a couple inches in my hubby's jeans now. :-P Oh, and I
definitely wasn't constipated--quite the opposite actually. ;-)
