Evening Primrose Oil?

I've kind of been looking around a little and I've come up with a few hits
that this evening primrose oil might be something that can start labor.  I
can't really find much info on it, though.  One site said something about it
can help to "naturally ripen the cervix" and also recall reading something
that it can be taken orally as early as about 34 weeks and vaginally after -
or something like that.

Does this stuff actually help to induce labor?  Would it be an idea to do
around the 38-39 week mark?  I know my doctor is going to start talking
about c-section right away.  With DD1, I was scheduled for the OR when,
IIRC, I was only 8 days over due.  With DD2, it was when I was only 1 day
over due... I'm not going to have a section unless it's absolutely necessary
and is actually *medically* necessary where if I don't have a c-section it
could put me/the baby at risk.  Otherwise, I will not want a c-section just
for convenience.

I went to pick up some castor oil (which did the trick in a fantastic way
with DD1) but Walmart was all sold out.  I'm giving this baby an eviction
notice no later than this weekend, and I am planning to try and enforce it
around my due date, which is 2 weeks now.  I'm not looking for an immediate
solution to kickstart labor just yet, mostly because I do still have 2 weeks
to go, but any time after NEXT weekend would work just fine for me, as I'm
just not having a very good time with this in the least.  Plus, 1 week on
either side of my EDD is just fine with me.  I guess any time from now on is
considered full term, but I think I would much rather go another week before
trying anything.  Right now, though, I'm just trying to take a little time
to find out my options about what I could or shouldn't try.

I've heard of this evening primrose oil, but haven't really heard all that
much about it.  I'm also wondering where I would start looking for it...
Would it be found at a regular store?  A pharmacy?  A health food store?

Have a look at the gentlebirth.org archives
http://gentlebirth.org/archives/natinduc.html#Ripening is the section on
evening primrose oil, but they also cover other induction methods.
Sounds like you should get started with the EPO right away, both orally
and down there, but it appears it's really only for getting your cervix
ready for labour, though I guess a ready cervix is a step in the right
direction. I would want to know baby was in a good position before
trying to encourage anything, I've heard too many stories of long
labours started with some of these methods but baby not being in a good
position and it taking time for that to happen.
Cheers

I used EPO with both of my previous pregnancies from about 35 weeks
on.  It did not help to induce labor.  DD was 5 days over, and for DS
I was induced on my due date.  -BUT- I had wonderful, quick labors.
DD was only about 7 hours, which I think is amazing for a first, and
DS was only about 2 1/2 hours of actual laboring (the wimpy cramps I
had while waiting for the induction to start working can hardly be
counted).  No drugs for either.  I can't say EPO did it, but I can say
it sure didn't hurt!

This is so cute!  I'm an attorney, and I think you just might've given
me an idea for my birth announcements when DS2 is born!

I found it at Wal-Mart for one pregnancy, but for the other, I had to
get it at either a drug store or a health food store. Can't remember.
Anyway, it is one that's not -too- difficult to find, unlike some of
the other drugs/herbal remedies (like red raspberry leaf tea pills --
another idea for you -- and one I had to buy online) that are touted
for helping with or triggering labor.

Good luck!

My labors generally seem to be on the somewhat shorter side... I remember
with DS, I went from 4-10cm AND he was born in about an hour.  I think it
was about an hour and 15 mins from when I was checked and found to be at 4cm
to when he was actually born.  I also recall it wasn't very much fun either
LOL

Haha well, enough is enough (for me) already.

I found some at the health store that has all kinds of health/herbal stuff -
same place that I've always bought my fenugreek from.
If Walmart carries it here, it was probably cheaper there, but the big
headache I get from Walmart probably was worth the little more I paid for
this bottle to avoid the headache of parking, walking through and then
waiting through the checkout lines at Walmart LOL
I actually heard about RRLT when I was pregnant with DS.  I'm not a coffee
or tea drinker at all.  I really can't stand any kind of either, but I drank
the RRL tea often.  I've heard that although it doesn't really help start
labor, it more 'conditions' and can make labor easier/faster.  I drank it as
a tea.  I found it as tea bags, but you know... I have no idea where I found
them originally (considering DS will be 8 this Saturday!)   I know I found
the tea bags locally and I know the tea tasted pretty bad (as I find all
teas do lol) but I do remember I drank it anyways and again, with DS, I went
from 4-10cm in record time.
I don't have any more of it left hanging around all these years as I
remember giving the rest of what I had left away to someone else, and I
didn't bother getting more. I think with that it's probably not even worth
it to get some for the last couple weeks...
I do, however, have a bottle of castor oil handy and a bottle of this EPO.
I did open the bottle up and they look like balls with gel in them (could
that be why the bottle calls them "softgels" or something?? haha)  I'm still
not entirely sure how I should be using them... I've found online something
about you can swallow them, insert them way up to your cervix (I'm not even
100% sure where, exactly, my cervix actually is) or you can bust them open
and put the liquid on your finger and something about put it directly on
your cervix or something.

Good luck!

I am not a coffee or tea drinker, either, which is why I ordered the
red raspberry leaf tea pills online.  Then I could just swallow it!
Much more palatable. :)  I have heard that simply swallowing the pills
rather than drinking brewed tea might not be as effective, but I just
couldn't gag the tea down.  I figured even if it wasn't -as-
effective, it certainly couldn't *hurt* anything to take them that
way.

I don't know that there's a specific way you're supposed to use them.
I've heard of people squeezing the oil out onto a finger, but I would
think you'd lose a lot of that oil in re-entry, if you get what I
mean.   I always just inserted the whole pill.  Since they're
softgels, they dissolve fairly easily.  I do recall a poster or two on
here (years ago) saying they put holes in the pill with a pin just in
case, but I never found that to be necessary.  Oh, and if I recall
correctly, I think I took one orally every morning and inserted one
vaginally every night.
